What are the Basic Facts of Forrest Fenn’s Treasure?

*Forrest Fenn hid a treasure chest and wrote a poem. The poem, if followed precisely (and understood correctly), will lead a person to the location of the hidden treasure. If you can find it, it is yours to keep.

*It is hidden somewhere in the Rocky Mountains, at least 8.25 Miles north of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

*The treasure chest is filled with gold, jewels, and unique artifacts.  It is claimed to be worth over a million dollars.

*The chest is in either New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, or Montana

*It is located above 5000 feet and below 10,200 feet

*It is NOT in a graveyard, outhouse, mine, cave, or tunnel.

*It is NOT near the Rio Grande River

*It is NOT under water or under a man made object.

*It is NOT necessary to climb up or down a steep precipice

*It is NOT necessary to move large rocks

*The treasure is not associated with any structure- no need to dig up old outhouses

*Forrest has said:

-There are nine clues in the Poem

-WWWH (where warm waters halt) is the first clue

-WWWH is not a dam

-searchers have solved the first two clues

a physical presence is needed to complete the solve.

-Google Earth cannot help with the last clue.

-searchers have been within 200 feet of the treasure

-he made two trips from his car to the location of the treasure in one afternoon

-the spot is the same as the location he planned to have his bones rest

-there isn’t a human trail in very close proximaty to where he hid the treasure

-IT IS NOT IN A DANGEROUS LOCATION.  Do not search where a 80 year old man wouldn’t go.

-It is, however, in a place a person wouldn’t normally go

-Tarry scant in the poem means ‘get the heck out of there’

-The Treasure location is in the sun, but the chest is not

-and….the location is in a very special place to him

Below, is Mr. Fenn’s poem which encourages all to get involved with the thrill of the chase!

As I have gone alone in there
And with my treasures bold,
I can keep my secret where,
And hint of riches new and old.

Begin it where warm waters halt
And take it in the canyon down,
Not far, but too far to walk.
Put in below the home of Brown.

From there it’s no place for the meek,
The end is ever drawing nigh;
There’ll be no paddle up your creek,
Just heavy loads and water high.

If you’ve been wise and found the blaze,
Look quickly down, your quest to cease,
But tarry scant with marvel gaze,
Just take the chest and go in peace.

So why is it that I must go
And leave my trove for all to seek?
The answers I already know,
I’ve done it tired, and now I’m weak.

So hear me all and listen good,
Your effort will be worth the cold.
If you are brave and in the wood
I give you title to the gold.

My Personal Musings on The Thrill of the Chase

(I wasn’t  going to include some of the articles below because I have changed my thoughts on some of the things involving the hunt since they have been written.  However, I’ll just state that so you can keep that in mind when you read 🙂 ) For myself, like reading through past comments, the thought processes involved in some of them may spur a person towards a different, possible correct, path; so I leave them)

  7. Hi Jenny,
I’m not sure where this belongs, so please move it as you see fit. It’s basically a “What I’ve learned from Forrest and TTOTC” narrative. Always enjoy your site; keep up the excellent work! Thanks.
    Joe

In my quest for Forrest’s treasure and laboring to resolve the nine clues in the poem, I believe I’ve learned a few things that are important not only in the search, but in everyday life as well. I won’t bore anyone with details, but along the way there were many backsteps on a path lightly dotted with epiphanous moments, and in the end, I believe I’m a better student of logic.

In the poem and in life, IMHO, the path to a logical solution typically involves different modes or perspectives of thought, and some of the modes might be literal, metaphorical, allegorical, symbolic, numeric, algorithmic, etc. In the end, IMHO, most logical solutions require creative logic to resolve, or to discover the truth in whatever’s being contemplated. In addition, I believe all will agree that creative logic is required to find the truths embedded in the poem. After all, Forrest has said, “Imagination is better than knowlege.” I’ll go so far as to say that, IMHO, imagination is a precursor to knowledge. So, to gain knowledge, or the truth, of the treasure’s location, one must use creative logic or logical creativity to be successful, IMHO.

Whether or not I’ve found the truth in Forrest’s poem is irrelevant and as yet unknown, and I’m not attempting self-promotion or self-indulgence. There’s never been a ‘Jules’ in my life who exclaimed, “Check out the big brain on Joe!”, and I believe many searchers have, or will, come to the same understanding through TTOTC. I only desire to articulate these thoughts because, a) it may help other searchers in their quest, and, b) it may be useful in day-to-day life. There’s a common saying: “The truth will set you free”, and there’s also a biblical verse that is very similar, though I’m not a scholar of any organized religion. In this day and in this age, ‘the truth will keep you free’ may be more pertinent.

My sincere thanks to Forrest for providing an opportunity for everyone to learn more about not only themselves, but the Natural world all around us, and to inspire in searchers deeper and more meaningful thought. The simple summation of this long-winded narrative follows, and, IMHO, it can be applied to Forrest’s poem and many, many things in everyday life. It seems this should be common knowledge, and perhaps it’s just me, but it has never been a conscious thought until very recently.

To See the Truth in all things, one must learn how to Look at each thing.

    Joe
    1. Thanks Joe, and I think you chose a perfect place for the above piece of wisdom….I deeply appreciate and love your thoughts shared. I can sense much of what you communicate and express so well! Best of luck in your continued journey! thanks again…

      1. Jenny,
It’s possible some of my teachers who were burdened with my education are turning over in their graves at the mention of ‘wisdom’ in the same sentence as something I’ve produced. : ) Bless their hearts and I am forever thankful for their efforts.

Thank you for your kind and very generous words.
        Joe

  11. Over at Dal’s I read the solve by Iron Will, and since I do not post there any longer (do not like their selective moderation), I wanted to post my comments regarding that solve here.

    ———————————-

    Iron Will,

First off I want to say excellent story and very detailed solve attempt! Bravo, well thought out. That said, I do have some comments:

    1. When Joseph Meek and his brother were trapping along the banks of the Yellowstone River and were attacked by the indians, they fled to the WEST to Stinking Creek. The poem says “no place for the meek”, then wouldn’t that mean the opposite of WEST?

    2. I like your idea of heavy loads and water high, however if the blaze were made of tar lines used to fill the gaps in the road, they would be gone when the road is resurfaced. Also, if you look in GE, those lines were not there in 2013 which means they were not there when the chest was hidden.

    3. FF has stated that the chest is not within proximity of any human trail, and that tree is very close to 3 roads.

    4. The tree is less than 200 feet from a very popular road. Wouldn’t that mean that many, not just a few, searchers have been within 200 feet of the chest?

Not trying to rain on your parade, as I said you did a great job! I am just curious how you will address the issues I put above.

  12. A couple more notes regarding IW’s solve:

    5. There are two trails, not just 3 roads there.
    6. FF said he wanted to throw himself onto the chest and have his bones turn to dirt. Well I don’t think he would throw himself UP a tree to die.

I think you have made good points regarding the first two clues, but I think the rest of it is wrong due to the issues I mentioned. The biggest problems I have are that Meek fled to the west towards where Iris street would be, well if its no place for the meek that would mean you head east towards YSNP not away from it. The streets would be resurfaced causing the FF to be gone. The FF was not there until 2012 – 2013 long after the chest was hidden. There are human TRAILS not just the 3 roads. FAR more people than a “few” would walk within 200 feet of that area. It just doesn’t make sense that he would do it, and not all the clues line up.

  13. There is a problem with the poem listing on some sites. Forrest is a careful man and says “The answer I already know” in his book. He is quoted, however, in some sites and reports as saying “The answers…” using the plural form. As it turns out, this small detail makes an important difference in solving the puzzle. Check the source.

  18. Possible Solution to F. F. Poem with a youtube showing the location
As I have gone alone in there (#1 Glenwood Canyon) And with my treasures bold, I can keep my secret where, And hint of riches new and old.
Begin it where warm waters halt (#2 Glenwood Springs)
And take it in the canyon down, (#3 No Name Exit 119 on I 70 turn right and take road down to dead end)
Not far, but too far to walk. (unless you can walk on water)
Put in (#4 boat in Colorado River) below the home of Brown.(#5 Grizzly Creek Exit)
From there it’s no place for the meek, The end is ever drawing nigh; (downstream about ¼ mile to youtube location) There’ll be no paddle up your creek,
Just heavy loads (#6 trains go up stream) and water high. (#7 river rapids up stream)
    See youtube https://youtu.be/CIb5DqASJ0Q
If you’ve been wise and found the blaze,(#8 Natural notch on canyon wall from a rock slide see youtube)
Look quickly down, your quest to cease, (Interpretation TBD. Could be in river? along river bank? is not there anymore?)
But tarry scant (#9 Tarry looking train tunnel entrance see photo) with marvel gaze,(#10 metaphor for canyon wall) Tar is small in perspective too…
So why is it that I must go And leave my trove for all to seek? The answers I already know, I’ve done it tired, and now I’m weak.
So hear me all and listen good,(#11 hazard warning) Your effort will be worth the cold.(#12 River water level too high and murky in summer. Best time to search is Winter)
If you are brave and in the wood (#13 Glenwood Canyon) I give you title to the gold.
    Hunters,
    • If you decide to search this area please beware of the following:
    • There is a monument at this site that says “In memory of Bob Viehe 1918-1988, Bob devoted his life to saving the environment, Enjoy and help preserve its beauty”. I suggest doing a river cleanup as you search.
    • Homeless live along the river bank below the bike trail. Respect their space and don’t search there. You may find yourself digging through their crap.
    • The river bank is a railroad garbage dump full of scrap metals. If you search there make a scrap metal pile and maybe it can be salvaged.
    • Watch the USGS 09085100 to see current water conditions. http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?cb_00060=on&cb_00065=on&format=gif_default&site_no=09085100&period=&begin_date=2015-07-17&end_date=2015-09-18
