Six Questions on TGUSTH:
I had the pleasure of chatting with Jeff and Dave of The Great US Treasure Hunt via a Six Questions Live. That video can be watched here: SixQ Live w/ TGUSTH
Here are the main highlights of the Six Questions:
- All clues are contained in the stories. (see below for additional details and advice given)
- The exact locations are intended to be fully solvable from home.
- All locations are accessible and do not require long hikes.
- Possibly 1 or 2 – might have limited hours and fee to park.
- Coins are hidden, not buried.
- Solvers receive $750 – Finders receive $250 (if both finder & solver – full $1000)
- All hunts are intended to be solved within a year.
- 1 or 2 hunts may be solved within the first week or so.
- Some locations are described as especially iconic and memorable.
- The creators hope to continue the hunt annually or …
- They are actively exploring a future television version of The Great US Treasure Hunt.
- They encourage searchers to share videos of their finds!
Summarized Q/A: (Full video here)
- 1Q) How can someone get involved?
Available on Amazon – $9.99 for immediate download onto device. After launch hardcopies will be available for $20.26.
- 2Q) What are you enjoying about creating treasure hunts?
Jeff:
- Enjoys traveling and seeing the country.
- Loves the excitement of watching people search.
Dave:
- Enjoys changing the format each year.
- Finds satisfaction in seeing people win.
- Q) Can a player win more than one hunt? (ADDED AFTER VIDEO)
As in our past Hunts, you can be a Solver or a Finder one time only, per Hunt. So you could Solve one puzzle and win, if someone else found the coin as part of your team. Then you could be a Finder of another coin where someone else is the Solver. Or, you could be a Solver-Finder, where you both Solve a puzzle, then Find that coin. Essentially, you’re just limited to $1,000 in winnings.
If you’ve won in past Hunts, you ARE eligible to win again in this one. Beth Hovanec and Nancy Zitko were our first winners back on Hunt #1, Beth solving, Nancy finding. Then on Hunt #3, Nancy solved and Beth found. And brother-sister team Tony and Margo Kneisser doubled up by winning in Hunt #1 and #2. Nobody has won 3 times, but it could happen!
- 3Q) How long do you expect the hunts to take?
Expect 1–2 coins may be found within days. Do not expect all 12 to be solved immediately, however. The goal is for all hunts to be solved within roughly one year. Will release hints if they are needed.
- 4Q) What advice do you have for new searchers?
Anyone can solve these hunts. There is:
- No boots-on-the-ground clue solving.
- No shadow measurements.
- No landmark interpretation.
- No field research required to solve.
The exact location is encoded within the story itself. Examples of what to look for:
- Repeated words
- Patterns
- Letter extractions
- Unusual language
- Hidden messages
To give a hypothetical example: A story may contain many words with “OO.” What might you do with it? Extracting the first letters from those words with ‘OO’ might spell: “Remarkable Park Blue Slide Atlanta”. That would be the actual location. Then go retrieve the coin – or find someone else to go get it.
Important Point: The hunt is solved from home. Only after solving do you travel to retrieve the coin.
- 5Q) How far is a hidden coin from where you park your car? Are the locations accessible 24/7 and free?
Coins are not intended to require hikes. Should generally be easy to access.
Accessibility:
- Most locations are free.
- Most locations are accessible 24/7.
- A few exceptions may have:
- Limited hours
- Parking fees
No admission fees are expected
When solved correctly, there should be little ambiguity. The clues are designed to reveal:
- Specific location
- Specific feature
- Exact place to search
- 6Q) What are your future plans for The Great US Treasure Hunt?
Planning for #5 – and working towards having a television show featuring the hunts – have a listen! Very exciting to hear!
Additional point: Read every story first.
Then:
- Read again.
- Look for patterns.
- Look for repeated words.
- Look for strange language choices.
- Look for hidden extraction methods.
The creators insist that:
The clues are in the book.
Not on YouTube.
Not hidden in interviews.
Not hidden in promotional videos.
Not hidden on social media.
If hints are ever released, they will clearly announce them.
