There’s Treasure Inside Treasure Story #6! Thanks to Chris G for sharing his search of the Past & Future Box of There’s Treasure Inside!
On page 158 of the book, Jon Collins-Black writes: “I hope you will share your stories with one another. Much can be learned through mutual experiences.” What better way to show our appreciation for JCB’s Treasure Hunt than by sharing our stories with each other.
I really appreciate Chris sharing his adventures! Sounds like an amazing place. So much fun to explore new places – treasure the adventures – indeed!

Six Questions with Chris G:
- 1Q) What Treasure were you searching for and what made you choose that treasure?
Past and Future. I chose it because Ohio is geographically closer than any of the other boxes(8 Hours), at least to my knowledge now. And I’m familiar with most of that drive there as well. Another bonus is the roller coaster park that makes it extra fun.
- 2Q) Can you share some of the clues that led to that search location? (If not, What are you enjoying most about the hunt?)
The chapter screams the state of Ohio on many levels, from Ready Player One to “Ohio” and “Erie” being in the word search. I can’t imagine JCB did all that just to have it be another state and frankly concluding it is NOT Ohio seems like a bridge too far.
I focused on areas around Lake Erie, as I think it speaks to Jon’s overall theme of beauty, joy and wonder he wants us to experience as we search. My “hint” for readers as to the exact location of my search is this: There is also an Erie county and its borders may surprise you.
- 3Q) Once you were on site, what surprised you most about the area?
Similar to other answers, you really get a feel for just how the box could literally be anywhere, and you quickly learn what effort is needed to check everywhere even in the smallest of areas. Google maps makes it seem like you can search areas quickly until you get on the ground. It’s quite beautiful, but then you realize you could spend a long time going over just a few square miles.
- 4Q) What is the most memorable moment or unique thing found while searching?
We found a fairly secluded beach area that could only be accessed by lowering down on a rope as the hill is steep, and then it led to rocky ledges all along the shore(pictured), I definitely felt like an explorer at that moment and even a bit of “aha” that it could be there.
- 5Q) You didn’t find the treasure box this trip. Are you still confident in your spot? Why or why not?
I would say perhaps not as much, although I plan to use it to better inform my future reading of the chapter. I say not as much due to the fact I focused on shoreline areas and I feel like JCB would not want to jeopardize the box there as a rising tide or weather event could wash away and/or damage the box. My “spot” also is simply too large to really know for sure as well.
- 6Q) Do you have any advice for someone else looking for treasure or is there something more you would like to say?
While it was fun to get out and search and I can say now that I did try, it feels like a very tall task unless the clues are cracked or JCB gives more hints on it. Logistically speaking, the clues need to point to a very specific point or it will simply take years and years to find it.
The Fenn box was simply a poem and it took 10 years to find and I feel his many past interviews about his life helped searchers as well as the fact he dropped hints at times to others when they asked(based on Netflix doc). I think JCB will ultimately have to do the same.
PS: I discovered Tofts ice cream in Ohio! Anyone in the area must try it! The vanilla shakes are amazing!!
