Adding to their collection of limited-edition collectible coins – which currently celebrate the treasure hunts – The Secret and The Thrill of the Chase – Uncharted Collectibles has created a treasure hunt of their own.

It is of course on a coin – the first of it’s kind! Let’s learn more!

Six Questions with Uncharted Collectibles:

1Q) How fun to have a hunt on a coin! Please share how someone can get involved in the hunt and what treasure they have the chance to claim.

Everything you need will be on one or both sides of the collectible coin you purchase. The coin contains a puzzle and the first person to submit a correct solution to the puzzle (by email to us) will win the $500 prize. There is no travel required. You can purchase the coin here.

Coins will ship the first week of September.

To prevent some people from getting an ‘unfair advantage’ if they receive the coin in the mail before someone else does – on August 31 noon pst – we will email all purchasers images of both sides of the coin. That week we will mail the coins.

Anyone who has pre-ordered the coin can solve the puzzle from the images they receive by email. Everyone will receive the images simultaneously and there is no advantage or disadvantage that will come from any post office delivery timing.

2Q) What were the different challenges, if any, in designing the hunt on the coin?

The coin presents space limitations so we had to design the puzzle accordingly. We also wanted to make sure the coin was visually appealing so people can put it on display after the puzzle is solved. We are pleased to have accomplished both goals.

3Q) Since the coin limits space (as compared to a book) – are all the clues for the final solution on the coin itself or might clues on the coin lead to an outside source/s – such as a website, video, etc.?

We prefer not to answer that question because we want everyone to enjoy the puzzle in whatever path they may choose to pursue. We will say though that no travel of any sort is necessary to solve the puzzle.

4Q) How did you decide on how challenging to make the hunt? Are you aiming to welcome newcomers, test veterans, or appeal to both? What is your projected timeframe for the hunt?

We want everyone to be able to enjoy and solve this first puzzle coin. It is a good introduction to puzzles. We don’t have a projection for the timeframe but everyone who ordered should be ready at noon on Aug 31 to receive the PDF and start working on it.

5Q) Should participants expect to encounter ciphers, and if so, would basic knowledge be enough? Are there other areas of knowledge – such as geography, history, wordplay, past hunts, etc. – that you recommend solvers brush up on before diving in?

There is no need to have any knowledge of any prior treasure hunt. Our puzzle is designed for anyone to play and everyone will have an equal chance of winning irrespective of whether they ever worked on another hunt.

Beyond that we prefer not to give any tips on this because we want everyone to pursue their solves however they deem best.

We will say though that we don’t view this puzzle as particularly difficult. We wanted to start with a relatively basic puzzle as an entry point for people who may not have worked on armchair treasure hunts before. As we release more treasure hunt coins we anticipate making the puzzles more complex.

6Q) Was there a moment in the creative process that stood out as especially meaningful to you – and are you planning on creating others?

We started Uncharted Collectibles for the purpose of selling limited edition collectible coins. Our first collection celebrates treasure hunts. We sell officially licensed coins honoring Forest Fenn and The Secret. Coins are available for purchase at UnchartedCollectibles.com.

The moment in the creative process that meant the most to us was when we had the idea to create our own treasure hunt and put it on a coin. We don’t think this has ever been done before and we love the idea because it allows people to have a beautiful coin that can be displayed even after the hunt is solved, and it also allows people to share the coin with friends and family even after the hunt is solved so others can have a fun puzzle to play with even in the absence of a prize.

We are planning to expand our collectible coin offerings – and plan to release brand new coin-based treasure hunts. Please continue to check our website.
