Displayed at the Pforzheim Jewelry Museum in Germany is a beautifully crafted bracelet dating back to around the 3rd century BC.   It is only one of the numerous pieces of jewelry in the museum’s collections. Jewelry from 5000 years ago to the present time can be seen here.

The bracelet featuring two snakes with center garnet was fashioned in Greece. The large gemstone is held in the design of a Hercules Knot.

The piece is believed to characterize the legend of Hercules and the two serpents.

Zeus was Hercules’ father, and husband to Hera, but Hercules was not Hera’s son. Hera was jealous of this newborn child and sent two serpents to kill Hercules in his cradle. Hercules killed the two serpents instead by strangling them.

The entwined serpents, which were killed in the legend, therefore symbolizes protection for the wearer. It was worn as a powerful amulet.

The name of the knot is thought to originate from this legend as well. It has since gone on to have multiple meanings, and often signifies unbinding love today.
