Six Questions with Danny C.: Searching for the Hidden H. Charles Beil Rogue Miners Cache and Forrest Fenn’s Treasure Chest

1Q) What Treasure were you searching for?

My wife and I went searching for “The Rogue Miner’s Cache” in Fayette County, West Virginia.  (This is one of H. Charles Beil hidden treasure caches)

Danny and his Dad (searching for Forrest Fenn’s Treasure)

2Q) What inspired you to search for that treasure?

Our inspiration came from us already enjoying the outdoors with hiking and camping. Forrest Fenn’s “Thrill of the Chase” book was a big inspiration for me too. Believe it or not it wasn’t the treasure itself, it was a reminder that just being in the presence of nature is a treasure all on its own.

My wife, my parents, and I ended up taking a vacation/treasure hunting trip to West Yellowstone, Montana and searched throughout Yellowstone. Have plenty of photos from that adventure too. (see some below)

3Q) What did you enjoy most about your search?

I mostly enjoyed just sharing this adventure with my wife. My wife is just as enthusiastic as I am about the outdoors, and figuring out puzzles, so we make a great team. I will say the historical information we found at the local Fayetteville public library about Fayette Station was a very interesting part of the search for the Rogue Miner’s Cache.

4Q) What did you enjoy least about your search?

Our least favorite part of this treasure hunt was having to hike through thick sharp thorns. After the first day of hunting I actually went and bought a couple machetes for us. They helped, but thorn bushes are everywhere throughout that terrain.

5Q) What is the most unique thing you found while searching?

The most unique thing we found during out treasure hunt was vintage prune juice bottles from the 1940’s-1950’s. There was old mining equipment lying everywhere and probably 15-20 old prune juice bottles across from the mine downhill.  I’ll attach a photo of the mine. We researched the bottles to confirm that they were real antiques. It was definitely an unexpected find lol. I’ll attach a photo of what the bottles looked like. They were green and brown. The bottle photo isn’t mine though it was taken from the internet. The brand name of the prune juice was called “Lady Betty”.

6Q) Do you have any advice for someone else looking for this treasure or is there something more you would like to say?

My advice would be take your compass, and invest in a good quality machete.  It gets pretty thick out there.

  1. I recommend investing in clothes (I wear a special brand of carpenter pants) that can prevent you from feeling the thorns (and prevents prickly-sticky plants from sticking to you). I have walked through massive areas of thorns and I only noticed them if my hand brushed upon them.

Miners and prune juice…didn’t know constipation was an issue (or is there any reason?).
