armchair treasure hunt copperdan

Congrats to CopperDan on the one month anniversary of The Troll’s Cache! A treasure chest is hidden somewhere in the US which can be used to claim Silver, Gold, and a priceless Emerald! Who will take up the challenge, solve the clues, and retrieve the treasure? Let’s learn more about it!

Six Questions with Dan:

  • 1Q) The Troll’s Cache waits to be found! It’s been one month since the release and searchers are scouring the lands in effort to discover the hidden location. How do you feel the hunt is going? How can someone get involved? Are they too late?

My very first treasure hunt, How to turn Copper into Gold, “The Magic Box” was solved in a matter of a few days. All my hard work ended with a feeling of disappointment because it was solved so quickly. Now that the Troll’s Cache has made it a full month I feel a little vindicated. I have sold over 130 entries into the hunt so far.

The fairy tale can be viewed for free at copperdan.com. If a searcher feels compelled he/she can purchase a numbered coin and map for $35.00. (I only had 150 of the copper plated coins made. Once they are gone only 3D printed coins will be available)  Once the purchase has been made he/she is redirected to a page where a screenshot can be taken of the back of the coin and the map. This allows a searcher to start the hunt immediately. I am also selling 3D non-numbered coins and maps for $28.00.  There is also an option to buy into the hunt for $20.00. In this case you only get the digital version of the coin and map.

As with the Forrest Fenn hunt, the finder of the chest did not get into the hunt until its eighth year. It is never too late to join in.

  • 2Q) What is the treasure of the Troll’s Cache? Can you share an approximate value? Can the treasure be retrieved any time of the year? 24/7?  Is the location handicap accessible?

The actual treasure chest was hidden but it is empty. This helped me control two things. I will know when it is found as the searcher will need to contact me for the loot. It also takes the use of a metal detector out of the equation

The current prize is 100 ounces of silver. (80 one ounce silver eagle coins and two 10 ounce bars of silver). There is also a one ounce 2021 gold eagle type 2 $50 coin. There is also a large emerald stone. Unknown size or value.

Each searcher needs to know their own limits. I cannot control acts of God when it comes to weather. Safety has to be a searchers number one priority. When going out BOTG use good judgement, let someone know where you are going, and consider bringing along a friend.

Define handicap. I want people to get out and off the beaten path. Does that answer your question?

  • 3Q) Are all clues needed to discover the location of the treasure in the Story, Map, and/or Coin?  Do additional videos hold hints or clues? Who is Captain Burke?

In my opinion the story, map, and coin OR a combination of the three OR possibly just one is all that is needed. Any videos or answers to questions, like these, may assist searchers but are not needed.

Captain Burke. That video is so creepy I made a second version just to scare searchers away, however they continue to watch and look…

  • 4Q) On The Troll’s Cache website (copperdan.com) is a page of videos.  These differ from those on your YouTube channel.  Is it safe to say that any videos with pertinent information to the Troll’s Cache treasure hunt will be listed on the website’s page?

All pertinent videos are listed on my webpage. Also all answers to emails are on the webpage and I am always updating. My goal is to run a fair hunt for all. Though I may lurk in private zoom chats, I do not answer questions. I do not reply directly to questions I get in emails. Keep an eye out on my website for anything I may deem necessary to answer.

  • 5Q) It seems The Troll’s Cache may require the solving of ciphers. Would a basic understanding of Codes and Ciphers be enough to learn how to decode them?  Or what advice might you give to someone who struggles with codes? What advice would you give any searcher looking for the Troll’s Cache?

I have been asked this question many times. The one thing I have learned about searches is how resourceful they are. For example, in my first treasure hunt it was necessary to find a geo marker to lead you to the treasure. The finders of my hunt were able to skip that clue by using a metal detector and a lot of grid searching. My biggest piece of advice is to have fun.

  • 6Q) The Troll’s Cache isn’t your first treasure hunt. You’ve created other successful adventures. What do you enjoy most about creating these treasure hunts? What are learning about yourself and searchers? Do you hope to continue and create more, even after the Troll’s Cache is found?

I have found I really enjoy writing. In my first hunt I created the characters of the Copper Princess and King Mitch. I ended the first hunt by leaving the storyline open to a continuation. I started writing the Troll’s Cache almost immediately after the first hunt ended. As I wrote I needed a mythical creature for the princess to run into and a evil troll was born. I have also started to bring to life King Mitch’s four brothers. Stay tuned for a future hunt with them more involved. I will also be doing smaller hunts that tell stories of each character. Like I did in “Finding Love” where King Mitch met his bride to be.

Hands down, what I like most is bringing searchers together to work on my hunt. Many searchers work in groups. Four searchers came together to find my first hunt. They jumped up and down like little kids when they found The Magic Box. That made all my hard work worth it.

It has been fun answering your “six” questions, Jenny. I have learned that six can be stretched into twenty yet still considered six. I may have to use that to create a hunt. I do appreciate all the good questions, though. I hope everyone that participates remembers to have fun and please be safe.

  • Thanks Copper Dan for taking the time to answer the many questions! I know searchers are enjoying this new adventure and chance to explore you have offered them! Thank you! And just to note….for those not familiar… Six is my nickname, and while I format the number of questions into six, the title is moreso because they are ‘my’ questions- they are ‘Six’ (my nickname) questions. ~ Always Treasure the Adventure! ~ Jenny (or Sixer or MW)
