The last Monday of each month, MW’s Spotlight will feature two Family Fun Treasure Games.  It’s great to be able to bring friends and families together for adventures on the game table.  As a collector, designer, and player of games, I’ve played a lot of games, and love to share ideas for a great family game night.

Like other Spotlights they are quick and to the point.  If wanting to learn more details about the games, links will be provided to do so! 

The first spotlight is on King’s Gold:

  • Theme: Pirates (players) compete against each other in effort to collect the most gold coins. Whoever can gather the most by obtaining the best combinations of the roll of dice wins. As the back of the box says, ‘Pirates (players) must choose dice wisely and steal gold shrewdly, to become the richest pirate at sea and win the game!
  • Ages: 8 and up
  • Players: 2-6 players
  • Time: 15 minutes
  • Cost: $15
  • Set-up/ learn time:  Simple  (on scale of Simple/moderate/lengthy/complex)
  • Why I/Family likes it:  Simple, quick, and fun.  It also is a game which allows 6 players to play.  Often games are for 2-4 players.  Six players can play King’s Gold, making it a great choice for a larger family gathering of plundering fun.

The second spotlight is on Splendor:

  • Theme: Who will become the wealthiest Merchant and acquire the most Prestige in the game of Splendor? That is the question.  To answer this question, players take on the role of a merchant during the Renaissance. You will invest in mines, trade valuable gemstones, and strive to develop your resources to earn visits from nobles, gaining more and more Prestige as play continues.
  • Ages: 10 and up
  • Players: 2-4 players
  • Time: 30 minutes to play
  • Cost: $30 dollars- Expansions available
  • Set-up/Learn scale: Simple
  • Why I (and family) like it: Lots of different strategies which offer numerous options and outcomes.  The strategies are not complex, so kids that play, have every chance of winning, as an adult.  Which is great play for a family.
