Six Questions with Samantha:

  • 1Q) Congrats on launching Cupid’s Arrow Treasure Hunt! Please share with us all how you first got started into the hobby of armchair treasure hunting, and what inspired you to create your own.

Thank you Jenny! I’ve always been interested in things like murder mysteries, escape rooms and puzzles, but I only discovered treasure hunts a few years ago. My newspaper had an article on The Secret and some people who thought the St. Augustine casque was close to where I live in Tampa. That prompted me to dive into the treasure hunting community with full force.

I got addicted quickly to the hunt for the casques. Then on a podcast with George Ward, he mentioned online games like Notpron, which opened up another world of puzzles. After trying so many different kinds of hunts and making new friends over these few years, I thought it was time for me to make my own contribution.

  • 2Q) How can someone get started with Cupid’s Arrow? And what is the treasure prize?

If you go to www.alienruins.com/loveisintheair you can download the .pdf file which contains the puzzle. There is no cost to participate. The prize will simply be $3,500 cash. I originally thought about having the prize be a romantic piece of jewelry, but thought maybe some treasure hunters might not find that appealing. Everyone likes cash, so this should hopefully encourage more participation.

  • 3Q) Is the proxy item available for retrieval 24/7? Can searchers solve all clues, and know exactly where the proxy is hidden before ever leaving their armchair, or are there some clues to solve on location?

The proxy item is available 24/7 in a public place. It is not in a dangerous location. Once you are at the right spot, if you have followed all of the clues you should know what you are looking for and how to find it. The puzzle can be mostly solved by armchair, although there are two “waypoint” locations that provide useful information. It is not necessary to find the waypoints in order to solve the puzzle and retrieve the proxy item.

  • 4Q) What did you enjoy most about creating the puzzle hunt for Cupid’s Arrow? Do you have any plans for creating future projects?

Writing the poem brought back memories of when I used to write poetry in college, so that was nice, being able to relive that creative time of my life. There are also some hidden surprises which were fun, but I don’t want to say too much. As to future hunts, I’m working on another BOTG that will launch in late July in honor of my pup, Hank Dog. His seventh birthday is August 8. And then hopefully in July of 2024 I’ll have a larger BOTG project that I’m working on which I have not yet named. And of course I’m excited to be participating in the Third Annual Masquerade with you!

  • 5Q) How long do you feel the hunt will last? Do you feel it is difficult for new searchers?

Great question. I’m expecting Cupid’s Arrow to be solved by the end of the year if not much sooner. There is no official “end date” but I don’t want this to drag on forever. Since this is my first hunt, I’m going to be relying on feedback from the community in creating my larger project for 2024. I’ll be dropping Cupid’s Arrow hints on MW as time goes by. As far as difficulty, it’s hard for me to say because I know how everything works in the puzzle.

  • 6Q) What advice might you give those searchers totally new (or old) to the hobby, who are looking at your cryptic clues for the first time?

There’s a lot of information on the .pdf, and everything is important in its own way. Look at everything carefully. Think outside the box. And most of all, have fun!
