August 2026 Q/A:
- What does childlike wonder mean to you? How would you describe it? ~ Jamie
Justin Answers: Childlike wonder is the stubborn refusal to let “because that’s just how it works” be a satisfying answer. It’s pulling a thread everyone else walked past. It’s the itch that won’t leave until you’ve followed it somewhere embarrassing.
Children don’t experience gravity as a law. They experience it as a personal affront — every single time something falls. That perpetual outrage at the ordinary? That’s the thing.
For a long time I thought the opposite was cynicism. But these days I think the more accurate term is incuriosity: the quiet, organized tragedy of a mind that stopped asking why and started just…filing.
Childlike wonder is the decision, usually poorly timed, to crouch down and examine the caterpillar while everyone else is already at the car.
What nobody tells you is that the caterpillar was always the point. The car was just where everyone agreed to be.
