We have been having some great discussions on the MW Forum on the question; Can Where Warm Waters Halt be confirmed in Forrest Fenn’s Poem alone?  (Join us!)

It seems that from a few comments Forrest has made over the last several years, it’s being thought the geographic location cannot be confirmed by the reading of the poem only.

Let’s look at those comments:

From MW (2019):

Q)How will I know if I have the clues right before my family and me drives out to get the treasure?

A)You probably won’t

From Forrest gets mail (2015)

Q)Do [you] expect that people will somehow *know* for sure once they have found the first clue?

A)No, many people have found the first clue but they didn’t know it. Until someone finds  the treasure they will not know for sure that they have discovered the first clue.

Q)Or they might have found it without realizing it?

A)Yes

Those three Question and Answers alone seem to suggest the location of Where Warm Waters Halt is not confirmed, or specifically deduced, in the poem alone, but is only known by all the other clues falling into place and discovering the Treasure Chest with Boots on the Ground.

This question connects to another searchers often have. In the following Q/A, Forrest mentions there are MANY places where warm waters halt, so searchers question… ‘How do you know you have found the ‘correct’ Where Warm Waters Halt from the many?

Here is the question and answer from MW (2014) prompting that concern:

Q)Someone unfamiliar with your poem receives a message that says “meet me where warm waters halt, somewhere in the mountains north of Santa Fe”. Would they be able to work out where to go? If they can’t, would they need the whole poem, another stanza, or just a line or word to help them on their way? ~Phil Bayman.

A)There are a few words in the poem that are not useful in finding the treasure Phil, but it is risky to discount any of them. You over simplify the clues. There are many places in the Rocky Mountains where warm waters halt, and nearly all of them are north of Santa Fe. Look at the big picture, there are no short cuts. f

If ‘many searchers’ hadn’t realized or didn’t know they found where warm waters halt when at the location, it suggests there isn’t anything at that location, or in the poem, to discern it from the ‘many other places where warm waters halt’- EXCEPT for the other clues falling into place, and the treasure chest being found.

This seems to be one of the main reasons the chest hasn’t been found; a lack of certainty once on spot.  We’ve all experienced this.  If doubt is within, it is difficult to overcome. However, if one had absolute ‘confirmation’ he was at the ‘right spot’, then he would continue on until the treasure is found.

It leaves us with the question, how do we search with absolute confidence at the correct location- that it seems many searchers had- those who had identified the first clues– and overcome the doubt to find the treasure?

Forrest seems to feel there is a way from his comment made in the first Six Questions on MW (2013):

“The person who finds the treasure will have studied the poem over and over, and thought, and analyzed and moved with confidence. Nothing about it will be accidental.”

The treasure is out there to find, and the searcher who finds it will most likely move with confidence following his interpretation of clues to find the hidden treasure chest.

However, it seems clear, that before this happens, many searchers will move with the same confidence, but yet, will discover their interpretations were wrong, and have to go back to rethink things.   Such is the life of a treasure hunter and the Chase!  It seems to be a trial and error Boots on the Ground affair.

You seems you are going to have to learn to enjoy the journey first, and above all.

  1. Jenny, I like the question, can where warm waters halt be confirmed by the poem? IMO it just feels like it should. If ‘many searchers’ hadn’t realized or didn’t know they found where warm waters halt when at the location, it suggests there isn’t anything at that location, or in the poem, to discern it from the ‘many other places where warm waters halt. Maybe 200 feet is just not close enough. ? In the end the 12 footer should have the answer or was it 15. Somewhere in there. g.
