The Lagina Brothers, famous for their search for the lost treasure on Oak Island and featured in the show The Curse of Oak Island, now hosts a new show called, Beyond Oak Island.  The first episode premiered on Tuesday November 17 at 10PM EST on the History Channel.  It featured Pirate Treasures.

The show starts with the Lagina brothers, Rick and Marty, sharing how their search on Oak Island opened them up to a world full of mysteries and lost treasures to explore.  They say this inspired them to reach out to other treasure hunters and hear their stories. Maybe they can help them in their search from the insights learned from their own pursuit of the Money Pit.

The brothers meet with a Christian Roper who is actively hunting for the lost treasure of the pirate, Jean Lafitte. Other stories of Pirate Treasures are discussed.  Blackbeard and the mysterious unsolved code of Olivier Levassuer, or The Buzzard, are mentioned.

Christian knows his pirate history!  His main focus is on Jean Lafitte’s treasure, though.  He shows Rick and Marty the 1957 True West Magazine article on Jean Lafitte.  It is this tale that Christian wants to follow up on.  The story goes that wagon loads of silver ingots were in transport, but the Spanish had set a trap. This caused the wagons to be pushed down an embankment and into a lake.

Excited about the history, research, and prospects of this hunt presented by Christian, Rick and Marty offer to send Matty Blake down to help him in his search.  Christian accepts, and the show continues at Hendricks Lake in East Texas.  This lake has its dangers, of course.  A lookout for alligators and venomous snakes is a must to have.

Although the lake was searched in the 50’s and 60’s, nothing was found at that time. Christian and the treasure hunting team are looking forward to using new technology to scan the bottom of the lake for possible anomalies, and hope to find a treasure which was missed in past searchers.

What they would love to find, if not the silver, are clues to the treasure at least being there.  Calvin Wilcher is in charge of the scans…..he is on watch for something ‘not of Mother nature’.

Everyone is hopeful….

In a location on the lake, matching the tale, with a sloped hill on the Lake’s side, the scans show some promising images.  Markers are dropped, and divers are sent down. Visibility is nil, so it is a ‘touchy’ situation.

The divers do feel some round objects, and a piece is brought up to the surface. This warrants some underwater metal detectors to be taken down.  Hits are sounded off.  The mud is deep on the bottom, and just as they might find something, a storm rolls in.

The search is called off for the time being.

Christian is not discouraged. To him it is the Chase and the history. And he says, “Treasure has a way of keeping its secrets”.   Plus, if when they come back and nothing can be found, he says they have the whole Texas coast and more to continue their search.  This is just the beginning!

Discovering history is part of the adventure, and that never ends.
