Is the Justin Posey Treasure Buried? In one sense of the word, it might be! (Join discussions on the MW Discord)
While reading through Justin’s Q/A from March 28, 2026 – something came to mind on how his treasure could be hidden. I wanted to share this method, especially for all those new and not as familiar with Forrest Fenn’s hunt – which inspired Justin’s.
The Justin’s Q/A was:
Q: Do you need to move a rock or anything else to see the container, and would a flashlight be useful during the day?
A: Something will need to be manipulated in order to see the treasure. Depending on the conditions, technically yes, maybe a flashlight could be helpful.
When Justin answered this – I was immediately reminded of how so many searchers (maybe Justin too) was hoping Forrest’s treasure chest was hidden.
Forrest describes a special cavity hidden under a capstone – secreting items underneath – in both his books – Too Far to Walk and The Secrets of San Lazaro.
I always loved the idea! I hoped it was hidden in that way. Here is what Forrest described – in summary – It refers to San Lazaro and his discoveries there.
So Forrest writes: (the photo above is what he is describing finding)
“It was about noon on a cold winter day in 1989 when Charmay and I were completing the final work in a room………because the wind was brisk, we decided to have our soup and sandwich there in the room where no one had eaten in more than 500 years. It was a rewarding moment………….While sitting on the floor and leaning against the south wall, I placed my cup of hot soup on the round piece of flagstone. It sounded a little empty and different from what I had subconsciously expected….………….. I carefully removed the five broken pieces of flagstone, one at a time……to our astonishment, we discovered a black, plain-ware jar that had been buried up to its rim under the floor. Inside the jar rested a rectangular, painted bowl, and both of them contained corn kernels…….”
So back to Justin’s Q/A…..
When he mentioned something might need to be manipulated to see the treasure– and a flashlight could be useful…… I just imagined lifting up a rock and peering into the special cavity with the flashlight – to see the treasure. Many searchers were familiar with this method of hiding in the FF hunt and so Justin might have wanted to ‘hide it in similar way’.
This method of hiding is also interesting in regard to the meaning of ‘Buried’. It’s difficult to say it’s not buried when it would be placed underground – but yet it isn’t covered with dirt – only hidden under a capstone. Is that why he doesn’t specify? Because in a sense it is – but not really.
Something to keep in mind when ‘retrieving the treasure’!
