Weekly Words for Dec. 18th, 2015 is as follows:
*Complacency is the misuse of imagination
Best of luck with the Thrill of the Chase and whatever else you seek!
.
Wow–now were talkin!! I really like this one–cuts to the chase so to speak. Always a pleasure–thanks Forrest Fenn and Jenny Kile!
Definitely a thought that could have broad application. Thanks, Forrest and Jenny. My first reaction was that complacency is the idling of imagination, so I will ponder that (compared to ‘misuse’) today.
Both big words in the statement have 11 letters, interesting too. Looks like quite a few goodies in there.
Perhaps complacency is Indulgence, astree?
Hmmmm,. Spoon. I will think about that. With Indugence and Tarzan already mentioned, i wonder how much room is left for names.
Mr. Fenn said that the person that solves the poem will go with confidence. This maybe a stupid question, but at what point is the line drawn between ‘complacency’ and ‘confidence’. Will someone help me understand the difference.
Really good question BW. I really like this quote because it makes us examine exactly what you are questioning. Here’s my take on it: Confidence is the belief in ones ability to succeed (fortitude and mettle). Complacency is the uncritical belief in ones competence (smugness and conceit). Its a interesting line between the two–one that may be easily crossed.
And it must be said that the manifestations of confidence and complacency in others are frequently judged by those influenced by their own goals and desires.
The difference: Confident is to finish all parts of the poem solution and walk to the chest – bronze chest. Complacent is to finish enough of the poem to know you figured it out and then give up by being satisfied with the challenge and not pursue the actual bounty. The statement appears to be contradictory to other statements that are about …. they don’t know that it is the chase they seek not the bounty. Given the prior week’s statement, perhaps someone is close enough to walk up with confidence and didn’t finish by giving the precise location. Perhaps they do not really care about the bronze box or perhaps ff would like it finished – which appears to be another contradiction about his wanting the puzzle to last 100 or 1000 years.
Wowza…words that flow like warm waters, never ending. I wonder how soon they are going to halt. Imagination is the key,you say,Forrest. There’s plenty of that flying around. Their engines are still on and are drawing high.
Maybe I should be wiser about where warm waters halt and why.Thank you Jenny and Forrest.
Well, it has been a long day. Yet, there are things that are always on my mind at my work. I posted 4 things that I need to remind myself for my customers and my business. I have a poster all around my work that says:
First, Is it the truth
Second, Is it fair to all concerned
Third, Will it build goodwill and better relationships.
Fourth, Will it be beneficial to all concerned.
Well, it boils down in me doing what has to be done. Thanks Jenny and Forrest.
This morning I had an eureka moment at my special spot in the kitchen having my coffee. That is my favorite spot to my own devastating deep thinking. I may have placed my last comment in the wrong place but it is the selfsame idea. The end is ever drawing nigh and the answer I already know. Anyway, back to work across the street.

The problem is that the only person who can truly judge whether we are being confident or complacent is the one who wrote the poem, and that person inevitably suffers from The Curse of Knowlege.
Good point Helen,
The ‘curse of knowledge’. Leading back to the origin in biblical texts. Adam and Eve, and the ‘curse of the tree of knowledge’.
Interesting Tamara, but not quite what I had in mind. Here’s a thought experiment.
We have been told that “imagination” is important. If we are complacent, we think we know what this means. What if the important thing is not the act of imagination, but the word “imagination” itself? Are we being presented with a hint within this word?
Absolutely.
It is a very interesting comment made by Forrest, and you bring up an interesting idea, Helen.
“What if the important thing is not the act of imagination, but the word “imagination” itself? Are we being presented with a hint within this word?”
My mind goes here…and to the stars.

Merry Christmas, Everyone! 🙂
And since you bring up Christmas, JC1117, wasn’t it generous of Forrest to gift prizes for the Holiday Ornament Contest last year? I don’t have a link to the prizes, but they were made by Teddy Weahkee. A couple of great examples of Teddy’s work were given on the contest page:

I think they sum up his work really nicely.
Merry Christmas, indeed!
Merry Christmas, JC1117.
Several of the Weekly Words could have asides to Christmas: “you will” (yule) and the “magi” in imagination. Also, as posted at chasechat.com , this is the first Weekly Words that does not contain “you”, so “miss-you’s” or ” miss-u’s” ( http://www.chasechat.com/showthread.php?tid=3301&pid=85385#pid85385 ).
To reverse Helen’s comment, maybe something about the word ‘complacency’ is misusing the imagination.
Merry Christmas to you Helen…and to you, Astree…and to you, Jenny…and to you, Forrest…and to all those with whom I have been blessed to converse with for a little while now.
Forrest was VERY generous with his Teddy Weahkee carving donations. I was very surprised when I saw what he was offering.

I was even MORE surprised when my talented wife won the award for the Most Beautiful Ornament! I’m very proud of her. She is very creative…but the competition was very fierce.

I am still very grateful to Forrest. When I hold Teddy’s carving in my hands I feel like I am holding something ancient as my mind travels. I am proud to “own” it. It is now a powerful piece in my medicine bag. Shhh…Don’t tell my wife. 🙂
Happy Birthday to The Greatest Medicine Man ever born!
Merry Christmas!
I like this one, it reminds me of when I ask someone why we do something a certain way and their response will be ” because that is how we have always done it.
Come place and see…hmmmm…
This weekly words seems to have a broader application than just the hunt. The “place” reminds back to the “From there it’s no place for the meek” and the first weekly words “You will ignore the poem at your own peril”.
Complacency – ” a feeling of quiet pleasure or security, often while unaware of some potential danger ”
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/complacency?s=t
“Place” can also mean to come in second in a race.
There’s a lot that can be done with the words and lettering in this phrase, too.
astree
It is easy to fall into complacency when a person has so much other things going on that they can have more control over the out come. That does not mean they will stay complacent it just means there is a place and time. As far as being unaware of potential danger I think an acute thinker would recognize that there could be a risk of potential danger in complancency…
If you come in second place there’s always another Race. Sometime when you try to grab all the bananas some fall off the tree…..
