CACHE #4 THE LOST MINE CACHE
FOUND IN ARIZONA
By Tim Stone and Ron Lucas
First I would like to thank H. Charles, Serg and Backbacon for an exciting hunt, with that being said here is the solution to THE LOST MINE CACHE.
After reading the story I began at Vulture mine in Arizona and was searching for a red mountain. I did this by means of Google Earth. After a few weeks of looking and unable to find the red mountain I went back to reading the story. This time I noticed that the three were at a mining claim of a friend in Wickenberg area.
This friend was Stan Laughin. So I went to the Bureau of Land Management for Arizona website. There I looked up all of the claims that Stan owned in the Wickenberg area. Then I noticed in the story that when they hiked to the red mountain they were two to three miles away from camp.
I then put pins on a map of the area where each claim were located and drew a three mile circle around each claim. From here I started to search for the red mountain/mine within the circles on Google Earth. I was able to come up with five possible cave/mine options.
Next I found a You Tube video from H. Charles about his mining trip to Arizona. While watching this video I saw the red mine entrance, so I compared the picture of the red mine to my 5 possible spots. One of them was a match.
I started planning a trip to go to this location. When I arrived I found it was in a rugged and remote area. Very excited I hiked up to the red mine and upon arrival I discover the entrance was the right one. I broke out the metal detector and started searching the mine and at the rear of the mine my detector sang. Excitedly I dug up the target and found a Miller beer can signed by the three.
After finding nothing else hidden in the mine I stepped back outside and was looking at the cliff face around the mine. I noticed a group of rocks in a crack on the cliff face, about ten feet up that were out of place. So I climbed up the cliff face and started removing the rocks and found the Lost Mine Cache under them.
I have left some of the treasure behind for others to find if they desire to go and look for the lost mine cache.
Happy hunting!

Currently the TreasureIllustrated site is under construction…. HCB is ‘renovating’ and will have it up again soon!
Here is a link to more information about the hunts, but again, the site is down at the moment. (however, notice it is the same mine where HCB stands!)
