On the Spring Equinox (3/20/21) a collection of Nine Treasure Hunts, each with a separate Treasure to claim will be released. All proceeds go to three great causes. This charitable event of the year is only made possible by those donating, and from those who are offering their time to create challenging puzzles. One of which is Martin Smith.

Martin Smith has always been a searcher and a collector of things, but after getting involved in Forrest Fenn’s Treasure Hunt in 2013, it became one of his passions.  Inspired by The Thrill of the Chase, in 2016, he published his first treasure hunt book Seek and Ye Shall Find, which featured a prize of $700 in Amazon gift cards. This prize was claimed soon after release by Larry G. Martin commented at the time: “I thought that if I became the treasure hider, I might better understand Forrest Fenn’s treasure hunt and ultimately increase my chances at finding his treasure.” When asked if it helped, he responded, “Well, it didn’t work out quite as well as planned. But I did find a new hobby! I figure if I can’t find treasures that well, at least I can hide them for other people to find.”

Read and Seek Adventures was created out of this newfound pastime. “I’m passionate about getting people to read and seek the adventures that come along with reading. In treasure hunting, much of the research done for solving clues leads you to places and times in history you never would have encountered otherwise. It’s a great way to escape, have an adventure and learn something in the process.”

Around the same time in his hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan, a local, longtime treasure hider known as the Wyoming Riddler retired (Wyoming is a suburb of Grand Rapids). For 33 years, Joe Cramer (the Wyoming Riddler) did free treasure hunts in the greater Grand Rapids area. He developed the riddles as a way to keep his mind sharp after surviving a serious case of carbon monoxide poisoning in 1978. Shortly after Joe’s retirement as the Riddler, Martin picked up the mantle to continue the tradition. Beginning in the fall of 2019, the Grand Rapids Riddler resumed the annual free treasure hunt event, with prize packages that always include a carbon monoxide detector as a nod to the original Wyoming Riddler.
