Over the years, Forrest Fenn has made many comments concerning the The Thrill of the Chase Treasure Hunt and his life. In Scrapbook 163 on Dal Neitzel’s website, Forrest answered a question about places he has been. His answer has many searchers questioning whether Colorado should be eliminated as a search state.
The Q/A was posted in November of 2016. It is as follows:
Q) You’ve searched for artifacts in deserted canyons?
A) Deserted canyons is not a good phrase. I have looked for artifacts in the mountains and deserts of New Mexico, Wyoming and Montana.
As you see Forrest doesn’t mention Colorado. Now I understand there are searchers who will say he doesn’t mention it because that is where he hid the treasure. However, I’ve been getting quite a few emails on this lately- with many searchers saying ‘hey wait a minute’. It has them asking:
‘If he never searched for artifacts in Colorado (and it would seem whenever Forrest was out and about in the mountains and deserts he’d be looking for artifacts- because that is in his nature since finding his first arrowhead at age 9), then how would he know an area so well if the place in his poem is in Colorado- one he never explored?’
The Q/A made some searchers feel that since Forrest hasn’t explored the mountains of Colorado, or the fact he doesn’t even mention Colorado, suggests his special spot isn’t there. How could he forget to mention the state of a place he has explored that is so special to him?
We learn in a MW FQ that Forrest remembers the spot very well.
Dear Forrest Fenn, If you could only see one of these two things before you pass on what would it be, your special place where you secreted your treasure chest or the chest and its contents? I hope my question is not to bold. ~The Count
The Count, Both the treasure and its hidden location are so vivid in my mind that I don’t need to see them with my eyes again. f
It was also mentioned he also might not have the familiarity of the area, if he never explored there, to write the poem before he hid the treasure chest.’
In MW’s Weekly Words (2016- link below), Forrest said:
“I could have wrote the poem before I hid the treasure chest, but I didn’t. f”
While it’s true Colorado can’t be totally eliminated, that Q/A does point out that Forrest explored the other states much more than he did Colorado. And for this reason, it would seem the odds for the treasure chest to be in one of the other states, instead of Colorado, is more likely.
However, it is for each of us to decide.
Best of luck with all that you seek! Always Treasure the Adventure!
