thrill of the chaseMr. Fenn, you said that the chest is in a safe location. Is there cellular phone reception at that location? – because to me a safe location would be one where you would be able to call for help if needed! ~J

J,
I don’t remember saying that the treasure is in a safe location. “Safe” is an absolute word, meaning there is no possibility for harm. So don’t you think your last sentence is oxymoronish? If you are safe, why would there be a need for a phone? Look around the world and tell me of a place that is truly safe. f

  1. I found two cracked safes that were tossed over Old Stage Road into a steep drainage ditch in Strawberry Fields. The treasure was in neither. Thieves litter. Or is it sedan? I forget the right word now.

    1. Did you happen to notice a lone set of Mongoose tracks nearby? I bet they’d love trappings like strawberries….and litter! Not certain whether they could out run a Sedan though

I would assume that would depend on the Sedan.

And also, moreso, on the Mongoose.
You make note of any other evidence E.C.? Or did the case come to an icy halt right there? Im really intrigued with this crime scene.

      jonsey1
      1. @jonsey1 – No mongoose tracks, but a nice nod to my favorite solution-reference of Madagascar. And no strawberries in Strawberry Fields that I have found. Just in the Spanish heraldry for Madrid and all of the “17th century Spanish” references Fenn likes to use.

Assuming your question is a real one, I also found golf balls, four in total. Two were wedged under a pile of rocks where I had thought the treasure to be hidden. I can’t imagine that to be random. A couple more were scattered in the dry gully along with some junked tires and wheels and other random litter, including an old galvanized steel trashcan that was jammed in the gully. My son and I worked on setting it free and digging inside of it for about an hour before giving up. The flies were atrocious after a heavy rain. The old range balls definitely were not shot from the heather, nor the Broadmoor golf course. More likely they were crushed with a #3 wood from some d-bag’s back porch over some huge rock formations. I found a bronze boundary marker for a cadastral survey (T14SR07), and some small washer-like markers nailed into a tree next to it with “D.B. & CO. PLS 23515” stamped into them. It made me think of “Catcher in the Rye”, the older brother. I also found an old torn up Sega motherboard and console remnants next to a hollowed out log which I found peculiar given Fenn’s words on getting kids off their devices. And I found a somewhat peculiar ponderosa burl near a park boundary marking the center of the lower square of the park. All of it is meaningless to me now. I could find the same relevance in a garage sale. Pics of all of these (except the presumed d-bag) are on my twitter feed, @mikebibler.

  2. “I don’t remember saying the chest is in a safe location” but it was stated in was not in a dangerous place, correct me if I am wrong. I don’t remember is Bill Clintons favorite reply before the grand jury.

    1. It makes me smile that the bootlegged album Alpha Omega was produced by a company whose logo was a pillow, crown, and scepter. Strange changing of words… “pillowed down and scented in” when the depiction is actually from an Alan Seeger poem “I Have a Rendezvous With Death”. The words referenced are “Pillowed in silk and scented down.” Fenn is always great at crediting the author, but in this case he changed it. Maybe for a reason?

  3. I would possibly consider inside a police station around a full room of cops somewhat safe! Just a thought and maybe down underground in a safe room from a storm maybe a shelter. The words” safe place” are left for much interpretation; on how they are used. I do not know where Forrest said this but I too believe it also was said somewhere. Just my humble but rambling thoughts….

  4. The only place I know is way ahead of Time, or, if it’s close then on a ‘slide’ after a run …generally on to Base, or home plate (but there’s other fields too)…faster than the opposing team can manipulate ones perfectly.hit balls to their own advantage. Why did I sound like Micky Mantle right now?Anyhow, controlled skids are sure to keep well struck balls behind them, and chasing the batter around the mound. Essentially that split second strike of the ball is a precursor to SAFE ON BASE…or better yet HOME SAFE. Sure….it puts a little pressure on the catcher….but what kind of fun would baseball be without those kind of thrills in the bottom of the ninth anyhow??

  5. Oxymoronish is not a word I could find in a dictionary. Oxymoron is. Is Forrest trying to draw attention to this word? Like Knowlege in the book and other words such as sumbody?
Oxymoron has a root meaning of foolish and keen. Both interesting words. Foolish has been talked about with searchers before, but not sure I have seen Keen being discussed.
Keen has a root meaning of brave, bold, wise and know for the first definition of the word. An alternate definition means to wail or cry: lament. All interesting if Forrest is drawing attention to the word.

Overall , I believe Forrest is telling us that even though he has said that the chest is not in a dangerous place, there is harm in almost every place we travel in todays world. Especially when traveling in the Rocky mountains, we then enter Mother Nature and the animals world. There is no “safe” place in the rockies, be smart searchers and don’t take any unnecessary risks.

Thanks for the weekly words Forrest, Jenny and J

  6. All,

Our cell phones are the most dangerous tools we own, at least in the hands of those who don’t wield them properly. I would consider a place where they didn’t work to be safer than a place they did.

  7. f read and responded to this question for what it was, an attempt to narrow down the search area for his treasure chest (there are a lot of places in the 4 states that do not have cell phone service and there are maps readily available that detail this). He didn’t fall for it and his response is par the course for how he has responded in the past to similar attempts.

    JCM
    1. Consider it from f’s perspective: he is peppered with questions constantly from searcher’s emails each day and then there are also the many questions that Jenny is sending to him that are sent to her from searchers. How does that affect his mood and responses he gives? I can’t imagine he wants to give out good hints and information to help move everyone along each week (as much as we would like that) towards solving his challenge; more probable is that he looks to get people talking about something and routinely dishes out what amounts to just being filler (some of it very interesting and educational at times).

      JCM
    1. When he said that, he was talking about the terrain. People are looking in difficult and dangerous to get to places (or were), ignoring the fact that Forrest was 79 or 80 when he went.
But that doesn’t mean that the location can’t be dangerous in the winter time under icy conditions, or that a wandering bear in a bad mood can’t happen along.

People are trying to define what he says to too great of a degree. It’s an impossible situation for Forrest to satisfy.
Ask yourself, is driving on a highway safe?
You cannot answer that question for all possibilities. What if it’s on icy roads? What if there’s a drunk driver? What if a ball joint breaks and your wheel falls off at 65 MPH? There’s a lot of what ifs that can apply.

  8. What is safe for one may not be safe for another. It all depends on the person and situation. Many beautiful parks and forests do not have cell phone service. Wonder what people did before cell phones – oh yup, they let others know where they were going, when, and when they should return. Which then, is more important: getting a $2M~ chest of stuff without anyone knowing or trusting that someone knows what, when, and where–any why. Anything can happen any where. I don’t think there is more to read into the post other than don’t be a fool, know yourself and know your surroundings–boaters are required to have a trip plan and so are pilots – what makes it different for hikers, skiers, hunters, fishermen, etc.? Common sense.

  9. All,

Beginning to believe that there sure are a lot of meek people out there afraid to leave the relative safety of home let alone their electronic devices. Have a nice vacation playing canasta with grandma!

“Put in below the home of Brown. From there it’s no place for the meek,”

    Seannm

    Seannm
    1. Yes there are a lot of meekness in our world today which is great if everyone was safe but we are not. Having a working cell phone will not ensure anyone’s survival, rep once times can be too great to over come the situation. A person must always be prepared to meet their maker, nothing to fear of you have prepared right

      JL
  10. After reading this again and again I noticed something. Forrest is asking us a question in the last sentence. He wants us to use our minds to think of a “Safe” place.
Interesting also is Safe with a capital S means of ducks: a sord of ducks. A sord of ducks is a flock of mallards. A male mallard is a Drake. A female duck is a duck or hen. A hen is a biddy.
A drake is also a mayfly, a small cannon and root word is draca, dragon. hmmmmm

    One must adapt, hmmm

Forrest I know where my safe place is. Thank you!

    DPT
  11. Thanks JJ, Jenny and Mr. Fenn, What is safe? That’s like asking a mover how many boxes it takes to fill a crate, to the mover, that all depends on the weather. Or if you like animals, the honey badger rides a mongoose only until it’s hungry ego says it needs another chip. Both of those deserve a two thumbs down. All I’m seeing here is a blank screen and that’s safe. You might also add that to be safe you really should know where to begin. I know there’s something I’m missing or forgetting here besides my heart, mind and stomach, begging for attention like a lighthouse at night, it will come to me though. Peace!

    1. Hi Strawshadow…You have my attention (LOL), don’t know about your heart, mind and stomach but I find that sometimes I can only take one day at a time…or write a poem (smile). We never know what is around the corner…don’t need to even open a can of worms (unless you like to fish)…but I expressly hope you find what you are looking for and deserve (including Peace).

      Ellen
      1. Ellen, everything I write is chase related and how did you know that I just got done fishing, lol. It was peaceful all right, too peaceful, not even a strike. My poetry is very honest and follows my emotions so I have to be careful what I post. Thank you for the well wishes and I hope you find what your seeking as well:)

  12. “Look around the world and tell me of a place that is truly safe. f”

Well… since you asked so nicely and all… here’s a scant for fun:
    – New Haven, CT
    – Vault Hill, NY (and another in Tasmania)
    – Porto Seguro, Brazil (Port Safe)
    – Ankazoabo Atsimo, Madagascar (translates to South East Haven)
    – not to mention all the places in the Rockies with the word “sanctuary” (in any language) in their proper nouns

    But yeah. Who’s interpreting?

    E.C. Waters
  13. More safe places :
-human health and resources department, they got ur back
    – safety department, u can count on them to enforce a new policy to keep u safe.
    – the UN keeping people safe since their inception.
    – Air Bags…. Politically speaking we could survive without them.
Just a few in my heat induced jockuliarity…….

  14. So we can be pretty certain that the destination is small, the location is huge. The chest is in a safe place for itself, but perhaps not for thr finder. Lastly, the location is not treacherous, because Mr. Fenn could go back on his 86th birthday to get it, in August! Quite the place, too!

  15. Box could be multiple square dances on different levels or limbo where u keep lowering the bar till no one can follow. Blaze could be a reference to giving someone a hot foot. Circle up the wagons and play Cowboys and Indians dancing around from sneaky spot to sneaky spot. I’m game as long as we aren’t dancing to the tune of climb to glory again. Good clean fun and keep it respectful, none of that kiss and tell stuff.

  16. I think a searcher has sent ff proof his chase is over and that is why ff is calling that person names. Ive seen moron, dumb and ass being used in the 3 last posts. I wonder if ff is going to be honest with the rest of us and just say its up folks this thing is over and the chase is no longer a valid chase. We’ll see if he’ll be forthcoming….is it possible he thinks the money finder will contact him? I wonder if he expected that? Would there be an incentive to do so?

    J. Tyndall
    1. Wow, not sure I see him calling people names. I’m not sure that is his character…IMHO.
I may not be on his wave length, but I’m giving it MY best shot. One day the ahh haa moment will come….
The chase is not over until he makes the announcement. IMHO he will know when it has been found and removed.

  17. So busy at the hospital with a family member that I just now remembered the Friday message from you Mr. Fenn. I always look forward to your weekly words. Thank you. Oxymoron’ish’ is a fun fennism t hat I will try to apply ox’s and y’s to your poem and not be too moronic in the process. Wait, I see oro in the middle of moronic.

  18. I feel obliged to post this publicly, and hope Ms. Kile will allow it… perhaps run it by Mr. Fenn if in question. The question I have is as follows; “Mr. Fenn sid that his poem was straight forward, and he wasn’t play ing games when he wrote it. It was 15 years in the making”. How many years and how many people, will it take to read the poem to figure it out? I don’t think I have it solved, but did he possibly design it for one person who could manage to “unravel the poem”? Thank you in advance. He is Sly, so I don’t anticipate an answer. I would probably be “floored”, if I received one! 😀 At least he still has a fun imagination, and seems a “Child At Heart”… 🙂

      1. Well, Since we all analyse everything so thoroughly in “The Chase”, Perhaps I should have been more specific in my wording. I do not mean to say he left it for a favorite person he knows, but for a specific type of person such as an “Empath”. Someone who thinks differentlythan most others. This is why I believe it is still going! All In My Opinion.

        1. In that sense, sure. A good puzzle is hard because almost everyone doesn’t get something. One person will. Maybe more people might have in time. But that one person is someone who figures something out that leads to the correct solve that everyone else to that point hasn’t.
I loved the movie “National Treasure”. In that story, Ben Gates had many ideas that no one else thought of. So in this sense, he was “the one” who was different. That treasure hunt was made specifically for someone like him.
The requirements in that story were knowledge, faith, work, and that something special we might call insight. That’s the same here with Fenn’s Treasure, and the same for all mysteries solved.

          1. In essence, you are saying that either Fenn knew how to create in a way that some would not be able to follow or that he could create in a way that one could find. If 5 percent of the 60k looking now have the ability that would translate into a significant amount, they would still have to have the wisdom and knowledge to put it all together. It is a very interesting concept which I have given thought to before but never had a name to apply to it. It has always been a theory of mine that everyone is on a different level and the more the restarts you have achieved the less contaminated things are. You get to keep trying till you get it right.

            JL
  19. Im a person that believes in encounters and so this one was bizarre enough that i have to share as this could happen suddenly an without warning. Major Fenn may not be with us much longer. So i was out throwing frisbee this afternoon in a random remote part with a friend and i throw the frisbee into the blackberry bushes and the disc landed on a grave or memorial. The grave was hidden from sight with no signs indicating its existence.
