The Second Annual Masquerade Tribute is coming up!  Mark your calendars. It will be released on 3/21/22.  And like last year, there will be lots of fun, games, and contests leading up to the launch and all throughout. Further details on the Second Tribute to come, but for now, let’s have some fun!

This first contest is inspired by one of the contributors to the Second Annual Masquerade Tribute.

Let’s meet David Cohen!

Some of you may have crossed paths with him before while working on his 52 MasterPieces.  52 MasterPieces challenged players to discover answers to an array of puzzles. While all prizes for the puzzles of 52 MasterPieces have since been rewarded, the website remains open, and is a great resource for practicing puzzle solving skills.  Dave’s name may also sound familiar because last spring MW posted a Six Questions with him as the winner of the MasterMind treasure hunt!

As mentioned, we’ll be getting a treat from David as creator of a hunt for the upcoming 2022 Masquerade Tribute, but right now, he has another fun puzzle skill to share with us: the crafting of Scrabblegrams!

As defined on David’s website, DavesScrabblegrams.com, a Scrabblegram is a message that uses each of the 100 tiles from a Scrabble game exactly once.

In 1997, GAMES Magazine held a contest for who could create the most impressive ‘Scrabblegram’, of which David was the winner! Following is his incredible fun entry:

A clown jumps above a trapeze.

Arcs over one-eighty degrees.

Out into mid-air,

Quite unaware

Of his exiting billfold and keys.

David continued to craft entertaining Scrabblegrams, and recently, with valuable help from Steve Geller (editor of 52 Master Pieces, and according to David “the best Scrabblegram editor in the world”), David published a deck of cards featuring 54 of his most clever creations.  Anyone can purchase these amusing decks from the website, with all proceeds going to support young adult cancer survivors.  They will make great stocking stuffers and are for an excellent cause (TheSamFund.org)!

However, we thought it would be fun to give a free deck away to the person who crafts a new amazing Scrabblegram in a contest for the Tribute (as determined by David, Steve, and MW)!

So to launch the second annual Masquerade Tribute, craft a Scrabblegram for your chance to win not only a free deck of Scrabblegrams, but a free entry for the 2022 Masquerade Tribute hunt!

To get you thinking- Here is another example. It is one David crafted for Thanksgiving:

Note: There are two blanks in the 100 scrabble tiles. These can be used for any letter. Also, any punctuation may be added.

Tips for making a Scrabblegram:

  • Use scrabble tiles themselves, if able.
  • Confirm you have all 100 tiles of the correct letters to use
  • Pick a theme which might use the difficult letters in words  J,Z,Q,X
  • Beware of the numerous vowels to use
  • Enjoy!
  • And don’t get discouraged…..anything is fair and fun game! Use silly words, abbreviations, whatever – to get those letters used!

Other examples can be found on the website: DavesScrabblegrams

Submit as many Scrabblegrams as you’d like by December 8th.  Make them as incredible as possible. We can’t wait to see them!

A Grand Prize winner for a free deck of Scrabblegrams and free 2022 Masquerade Tribute Hunt entry, will be deemed and announced on December 10th. There will also be a first runner up prize for another free deck.

Get your Scrabblegram minds in gear and fashion 100 letters of cleverness….. who will be crowned Masquerade Tribute’s Scrabblegram winner?
