It’s always exciting to learn more about a hunt! In the Cloaked Treasure Hunt a $20,000 treasure waits to be claimed! That’s right – $20.000! I appreciate the time Greg and Mike (two of the creators of Cloaked Treasure) took to answer the following Six Questions! It helps us understand more about the hunt – and it sounds awesome!!! I hope you join the adventures! Enjoy!
Six Questions with Greg and Mike:
- 1Q) I love to learn the background of the creators – what inspired you to create a hunt? Were you once a treasure hunter yourself?
I was listening to a 2015 NPR segment on the ride home from work where they were talking about Forrest Fenn’s hidden treasure in the Rockies and thought, “Wow! That sounds amazing!” I had backpacked a couple hundred miles in Yellowstone already and been on trips to a lot of other parks and wilderness areas out west as well, so I was thinking maybe I had a shot.
However, I pretty quickly realized I didn’t have the free time or availability living in Michigan, working full time, and raising four young kids to make a real go at it. But it did get me thinking about how I would set up a hunt like that if I ever got the opportunity. I landed on the idea that having a series of clues or stages would allow more people to participate and to stay in the game even if one particular clue stumped them. I finally was in a position this past year financially and from a time perspective to kick off a smaller scale experiment in my home state. I convinced a few friends and relatives to be partners, and the Cloaked Treasure Michigan hunt was born.
- 2Q) Please share how someone can get involved in the Cloaked Treasure Hunt!
That is easy! www.Cloakedtreasure.com provides all of the details of how the hunt is set up, how to registered, or how to contact us directly. From there, people can decide if this is for them or not. The registration fee is $40, which helps us cover our costs and set us up to run future hunts!
- 3Q) What advice would you give those searchers just getting started – what do they need to do to get caught up? Do you feel they are at a disadvantage?
Our favorite part about this hunt design is that new participants are NOT actually behind or disadvantaged if they didn’t participate in prior stages. Everyone has the same poem now (as of Dec 1st) and access to all of the prior stage solves.
For someone just getting started, I would recommend reviewing each of the prior hunts, how they were solved, and the clues that involved.
This is all on the webpage “members” area and is unlocked to the public. It will give our new participants a look at how we’ve designed previous stages, what the solves were, and all of the artifacts that will be used in this final $20,000 stage.
Finally, I’d also check out our YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/@CloakedTreasure). We’ve done some livestreams and video hint drops there as well. That will “fill the gaps” and maybe even provide a hint or two toward this final stage!
- 4Q) It is known the treasure item is hidden in Michigan. Are all the clues solvable from anywhere in the country or does someone have to physically be at a location to solve some of the clues? Is the locations accessible 24/7 – even now in winter?
This final stage has two main parts – Part I: the four verse poem to solve which points you to a physical location you must find something with information, and Part 2: using that information along with the artifacts we’ve posted from the previous stages to find the final location of the treasure… which you have to physically go to claim. You can likely do most of the solve work remotely, but you are going to have to visit at least two “boots on the ground” locations, likely on different dates. So while you can participate remotely, you will need to have the necessary means to travel to Michigan at least a couple of times.
One thing we remind our participants (we call them Seekers): as you search, please obey any local rules, respect property rights and hours of operation, travel safely, and be respectful to the public and other Seekers. We did not NOT bury the treasure, so you will not need to dig any holes in the ground for this, so please leave all stones UNturned 🙂
As far as Michigan in December…we definitely believe this can (and will) be found in the coming weeks or months. So if you find yourself searching outdoors, it seems likely you may need to move some snow. If your search takes you indoors, well, the only snow removal would likely be from your windshield.
- 5Q) What are you enjoying most about the hunt to date? Any surprises or stories you want to share?
We’ve really enjoyed building the different stages and getting to know so many folks around the state that have been solving the puzzles and winning the cash prizes for each stage. We’ve already given away over $10,000 in prizes, and we still have this final $20,000 stage!
As far as favorite stories, we’ve had seekers solve stages with their family members, and we’ve done livestreams with them on YouTube to talk about the stage, how they solved it, and the fun they had. This past stage had four different groups all in the right general spot looking with flashlights in the dark all at the same time! Too many fun stories to count, but if people want to hear some, they can check out the livestream recordings on the CloakedTreasure YouTube channel.
One quote that did stick with us from Stage 3 was, “I took my father in law today and he said he felt like Indiana Jones when we were sitting alone in the giant room [in the Detroit Public Library] looking at the book with the [blacklight] flashlight and watching for others!”
- 6Q) Are new searchers able to find the final location using just the previous found artifacts images on your website? When do you feel the $20,000 treasure will be claimed? Are searchers close?
For all Seekers, new and long term alike, the information to claim the prize comes from the 4-verse poem and the visual images of the artifacts we have shared. We feel that the main hint and the artifacts are enough to solve the puzzle and find the treasure, but it will likely take some running down of leads and visiting locations as we built in some intentional ambiguities. That said, every 2 weeks we will release additional hints that will help refine solves and get Seekers closer to the treasure.
When we designed this final stage, we thought it would take 2-4 months to solve. However, we have been wrong before with some stages being solved much quicker than anticipated while others took longer than that thought.
As far as knowing if anyone is close, we do get DMs from seekers on our CloakedTreasure Discord server telling us about theories and sharing solves. We obviously can’t confirm or deny any of their theories as that would provide an unfair advantage. And I’m sure many of them will wonder over to segment on Mysterious Writings when it is posted. So all we can say right now is that there is still time to get in on the game.
