MW has written about Dutch Schultz and his last words before. For those readers not familiar with who Dutch Schultz is or his lost treasure, you can click to read a summary of The Dutch Schultz Hidden Treasure? or watch the following Video below.

This article is going to look at some of the other ‘last words’ of Dutch Schultz which might offer more support for the treasure to be hidden near Phoenicia, New York. Phoenicia has been a popular search area for the lost treasure of Dutch Schultz.
The last words we want to look at are as follows: (as shared in ‘Kill the Dutchman!’ (Available on Amazon)
“If that aint the payoff. Please crack down on the Chinaman’s Friends and Hitler’s commander. All right, I am sore and I am going up and I am going to give you honey if I can. Look out. We broke that up. Mother was the best bet and don’t let Satan draw you too fast.”
“Over a million, five million dollars. Look out. Please get me up.”
“If you do this you can go on and jump right here in the lake”
And also his very last words:
“I want to pay, let them leave me alone.”
Dutch Schultz was delirious with fever of over 106 degrees, mumbling for hours, before he finally passed away. Police were with him recording his words. Many feel he had ‘his treasure’ on his mind at least a few times throughout these last murmurs.
Before he was shot by other mobsters on that October night, it’s known Schultz had gathered up cash, jewels, and other valuables to place in a safe box he had made because he was concerned of going to jail for tax evasion, and wanted to keep it safe. It is believed he buried that treasure to later retrieve once either cleared of charges or released out of jail.
What happened though is he was killed in the meantime, and his treasure remained hidden. The question is where.
The above ‘last words’ might offer clues that he did indeed bury his millions in the small town of Phoenicia, New York, where it might remain today to find.
The Chinaman in Schultz’s mumbles was most likely Chink Sherman. Schultz and him were bitter rivals, and at the time of Schultz’s death, it wasn’t known where Sherman was. He had actually been murdered and was later found in a grave near Monticello, New York, which is Southwest of Phoenicia.
It is unclear if Schultz knew this at the time, but he might have. And so it’s possible that Schultz’s last words of mentioning the Chinaman, being sore, going ‘Up’, and going to give you HONEY (referring to money) might link to Monticello. Phoenicia is ‘UP’ from Monticello (where the Chinaman was)
We know Schultz was going in and out of consciousness, with memories of the past and present concerns being muttered about. Might he have been jumbling up current and past thoughts? He might have been thinking of going up to Phoenicia to his treasure from where the Chinaman was at the time.
What’s most interesting though, are Schultz’s VERY last words, the last words ever spoken. The time when he was closest to death. They were:
“I want to pay, let them leave me alone.”
Who is he talking to? Who is he asking to get them to leave him alone? Is it possible Schultz was talking to the devil here, trying to make the last deal of his life. Asking the Devil to ‘pay’(give them his treasure) and get them (the government/police) to leave him alone?
The police had been asking him questions all through the night. Did he just want to be left alone?
It’s possible these very last words offer support for Dutch Schultz’s treasure to be hidden near the Devil’s Tombstone or Devil’s Face landmarks near Phoenicia- a place he is known to have gone.
Schultz knew he was dying and it’s possible he was talking with the devil in those last moments. It’s known he hid his treasure because he was going in for tax evasion and wanted to keep the government from getting it. It was the beginning of the end for him. However, he is known for saying ‘I want to pay’ and help those out in the government. Schultz is quoted as saying:
“I offered $100,000 when the government was broke and people were talking about revolution and they turned me down cold. You can see how I was willing to pay. Everybody knows I am being persecuted in this case. I wanted to pay.”
It’s possible Schultz hid his treasure below the watch of the Devil’s Face, near the lake, for the Devil to look after and take care of. What better place?
And on the night of his death, maybe he was telling the Devil, I want to pay…. “release my treasure from your care where I hid it”…. Let them leave me alone.
Before this last moment, other thoughts about where he hid his treasure were possibly mumbled about too. Again supporting Schultz hid his treasure around the Devil landmarks.
Remarks about ‘Don’t let Satan draw you too fast’, Over a million, five million dollars’, and ‘Jump in a lake’; along with ‘Look Out’, which Schultz speaks numerous times, and also ‘get me up or let me up’, seem to be about his treasure and the landmarks too.
The Devil’s Face landmark overlooks a small lake. The lake is between the Devil’s Tombstone and the Devil’s Face on the mountainside. The Dutch Schultz lost treasure could very well be between these two locations.
We don’t know how a mind works, but it’s possible, in some instances, when Schultz was saying ‘look out’, he was referring to the Devil- Look out for the Devil– for he is watching over my treasure and be careful around him.
And when he is saying ‘get me up’ (again mentioned over and over again in his last words’ transcripts) this could connect to ‘don’t let satan draw you too fast’– or the tombstone.
Could he have been thinking when talking to the police at the end:
If you help me get up and retrieve the treasure, you can jump in the lake, which is right HERE where it is hidden. But look out—he’s watching. I want to pay you!
It’s seems it is possible his last remarks were talking with the devil, making a last deal, with not only the devil, but the police as well. Maybe he was wanting to die (or live) in peace.
And does this offer a great clue where he hid his treasure? Under the Devil’s watch?

Dear Jenny, I have lived in the area all my life and this mystery as well as others have intrigued me all my life. I don’t think you are far off in estimation of the where abouts of the treasure. I’m quite sure you are about a mile in a half to two miles off in your estimate. This is all I will say other than it is in Greene county and not Ulster county I am quite sure it will be found in a farmers field which he (Dutch) states. ” If the farmer only new what was buried in his field”. I believe I know which field. I have metal detected the area and have yet to hit a particular field of interest, sort of making sure where it isn’t first. Happy Hunting not far off When standing at the Tombstone you are on the correct side of the road.
