Chapter 4 Content / Summary

Jon begins sharing a memory of him at 7 years old digging for ‘treasures’ (finding dark smokey quartz) near where he lived
Mentions how the Hiddenite emerald mine is located up the road
Introduces Rob Lavinsky into the chapter saying that at the same time he’s digging – Rob at age 11 is digging in Columbus Ohio
Writes about Rob’s background and his continued passion for minerals – blazing his own path and leading others into this fine art of collecting
Shares how Rob helped him acquire the minerals and gems in the treasure boxes
Jon specifically mentions how Rob helped him source the Emerald featured in the chapter.
The chapter goes into a little on Emeralds, the history of the Chivor Emerald and discovery of the mine where it came from.

Interesting Quotes / Curiosities / Possible Clues

Jon’s memory of where he dug at 7 is curious:

“…red dirt embankment …. walked down the sloped street …. to cul-de-sac below …. from there I’d taken a sharp left, crossed the gravelly pavement and stepped onto a barely worn path, mostly used by the dogs that barked ….. the trail followed a metal chain-linked fence for a ways ….. past the fence the path continued a little longer before ending abruptly at an empty lot….excavation site”

How the Chivor mine was found- after being forgotten for 200 years – is another definite curiosity:

“…Restrepo possessed just one solitary clue…..the Chivor mine was positioned near a very particular outlook. This vista was the only place where the view from the Andes’ range opened up and the Plains of Llano could be seen below.”
“Restrepo would need to locate this specific vantage point…….. would only know he was near the mine if he could find the right vista….. he had to blaze his own path….”
“…became exhausted…longed to give up…. But as the light of each morning’s sunrise greeted them, Restrepo and his men kept making the decision to follow their clue, wherever it would lead.”
“…a view gapped open between two jagged grey peaks…. between these rock towers, they gazed out to see the green rolling Plains….. spread out below.”
“Now in a way similar to how the Chivor mine awaited Restrepo, our ninety-six carat Chivor emerald waits patiently for you to come find it.”

While this story on finding the mine is accurate – according to accounts (such as this one) – searchers have to wonder if ‘finding the treasure’ doesn’t follow the same path as finding the mine – for at least part of the journey.
