Chapter 3 Content / Summary
- Jon shares how he traveled to Japan and fell in love with the culture in 2015
- Mentions going to Hakone – known for its puzzle boxes
- Introduces Seth Gould – who lived in Bakersville and is the creator of the 5 treasure boxes
- Jon wanted the treasure boxes to be treasures themselves and how Seth’s work would be ideal.
- One of Seth’s boxes, COFFER, is in the Smithsonian
- Chapter goes to Faberge and to Michael Perkhin (who is considered one of the most skilled workers of Faberge).
- He designed the Magnifying Glass – Sherlock Holmesian symbol – reminding us of the importance of paying attention to the smallest things.
- Shares how reimagined jeweled art to include small household items: Ink bottles, umbrella handles, table clocks, and ashtrays
- Jon shifts to the story of the 54 Imperial Faberge Eggs produced – and how during the Russian Revolution – many disappeared. The 3rd remained missing until 2004 – bought by a metal scrap dealer in the US.
- It was not known to be a Faberge egg until the man inspected it more closely. He noticed a small detail- the name Vacheron Constantin on the watch inside the egg.
- Jon refers to that story and shares how noticing details is important.
Interesting Quotes / Sentences
- “When reading this book, noticing details will help you find our treasures.”
- “Simply remembering a name, or a birthday, or a shared moment can make all the difference to someone.”
- “…about 6000 nautical miles east of Japan and forty miles northeast of Asheville, North Carolina, lies another small town….” (it’s Bakersville where Seth lives – but maybe the numbers and directions can apply to something else)
- “…trains that arrive every three minutes…. Eat at a 5 star restaurant or visit a local 7-eleven…” 3, 5, 7, 11 (odd or prime numbers?)
Chapter 3 Curiosities and Possible Clues
It’s been noticed there are small rune like details on the Magnifying Glass (More Here)
Like Chapter 2, Notched Letters are seen in the chapter title
The Puzzle Box – 5×5 Squares
The side of the puzzle box has 8 5×5 Squares on its side. Some of the cells in the square are white – or maybe darker- than other cells. I’ve considered the possibility of connecting this to a Polybius square of letters. Could the different colors indicate certain cells – and therefore letters – to use to spell something?
For instance – the square in the top left – the ‘white cells’ correspond to the letters E, V, and W.
Route 40
40 miles is mentioned in the chapter- as well as LA and North Carolina. Could this be a hint to Route 40 – This route runs from Barstow CA (city just north of LA) to North Carolina. A total of 2556 miles.
