Hunt for Whistill Treasure Hunt: Six Questions with Jeff Raveaux

Six Questions with Jeff:

  • 1Q) Your latest hunt was released in July 2025 – the $1025 treasure remains yet to claim!  Please share how searchers can get involved!

The clue cards are available on multiple platforms, but the easiest way to get a version that you can print out is through the Hunt for Whistill Facebook Group. It is also a great place to meet others and share ideas on possible solutions. We have members in the group that have teamed up from all over.

  • 2Q) What is your background with treasure hunts? When did you first get involved in the hobby yourself?

I would like to think it started with an introduction to Geocaching back in 2003, but it started many years earlier than that with a felt hat and Indiana Jones on the big screen. However, it wasn’t until my wife and I were on a trip in New York that we were introduced to an annual treasure hunt that was three week running and the talk of the community. We spent hours in two feet of snow as we transversed different parts of the city while trying to get the clues to line up. We didn’t find the token, but we had a blast just trying.

  • 3Q) This current hunt isn’t your first. What inspired you to create treasure hunts? How would you describe your hunts – cipher heavy, wordplay, historical research, or ?

Through the process of completing my first book, I lost track of how much time I spent with my wife and son as we tried to find creative ways to advertise. Take for example the time we made a costume and filmed an alien outside our house as a promotion for the book. Through the tears of laughter and the stares from our neighbor through her window blinds, we made a memory that we will never forget. We wanted to create something that people could take part in with their friends and families while having an adventure of their own and a chance for some of their own quality time.

As far describing the hunt, I have used all of those examples you listed above on previous treasure hunts, but for the one that is ongoing, I will leave that as a “To Be Determined”.

  • 4Q) What advice would you give a searcher just getting started into the hunt? Are they at any disadvantage? Can they quickly catch up?

Typically people start working through the clues as soon as they are posted. Some even venture out that day to locations in search of victory. My advice would be to not focus on one clue and remember to have fun. They still have plenty of time, and who knows, they might see something in ten minutes that a team hasn’t put together in five months.

  • 5Q) Your current hunt requires physically finding the treasure proxy. Is the location of the hidden item easily accessible 24/7?  How far is it off a beaten path? Can it be found in winter?

Good questions. Yes, to the first one. The clues will answer the second one. Yes, to the third.

  • 6Q) You recently released a clue – it seems there are other materials needed than just the 11 images. Can you share what else a searcher may need?

The prizes for the treasure hunts are funded through the proceeds from book sales. For this treasure hunt, the Mothman card was created using a book cypher. It was a way to offer an advantage in the form of an additional clue to those who help support to the treasure hunts. It was my way of saying thank you. However, seeing as we are almost at the six month mark, I figured it was time to put it on the table. No purchase is necessary, you just need be creative and not afraid to think outside the box.
