I had the pleasure of catching up with Samantha to learn more about The Source Code! Let’s get to it:
Six Questions with Samantha:
1Q) Congrats on releasing yet another treasure hunt! Please share a bit of background on your own treasure hunting journey. How did you first become involved in the community? What inspired you to create your own hunts?
Thank you Jenny! I’ve always enjoyed puzzles, escape rooms, and mysteries, but the first treasure hunt exposure for me was when I discovered The Secret by Byron Preiss. It was in 2021, and I was immediately hooked into this wonderful community! Not too long after, I created my first puzzle, Cupid’s Arrow.
- 2Q) How can someone get involved in The Source Code? What is the approximate value of the treasure cache and/or your favorite item included? What’s the size of the proxy?
The Source Code is a book that is available for sale on Amazon for $19.82. The prizes are valued at just over $10,000, and the most valuable item is a diamond ring. More items will be added as the hunt goes on, and that information will be shared on the official Facebook page.
- 3Q) The Source Code is a BOTG hunt (Boots on the Ground – meaning you have to go physically find a hidden item to claim the treasure). How precise of a location will a searcher discover once all the clues are solved from home? Is the location of the proxy accessible to all 24/7?
When you solve all of the clues, you will know the area where you need to physically go to retrieve the proxy item. Once you are in that area, the book and rules will explain what you need to do in order to find it. Be sure to read the rules as well!
- 4Q) What does your process look like from initial idea to final published hunt? Do you begin with the puzzle concepts or the narrative – what comes first for you? How would you describe the solution’s puzzle path – Lots of ciphers? Word play? Riddley?
The puzzles were designed with the narrative in mind. Everything that you need to know is in the book. There are various puzzles with different levels of complexity, and hopefully, something fun for everyone!
- 5Q) I ask this in almost every Six Questions with a creator of a hunt because I believe it’s genuinely one of the most helpful insights for readers: What advice would you give to someone starting your hunts for the first time?
The Source Code has much more of a storyline than The Franklin Key, so it can be read as a book first, and then as a puzzle hunt. When I start a new hunt as a solver, I’ll usually read the whole book and then go back and see how the puzzles work. That’s not the only way to approach it, though. If you see a fun puzzle that you want to try mid-way through the book, don’t worry about staying linear.
- 6Q) What do you enjoy most about watching people solve your hunts? What would you like a searcher to experience and enjoy while in pursuit of your treasure? How long are you expecting the hunt to last?
Hopefully, this hunt lasts longer than The Franklin Key, and I think it will. Most of the puzzles are more challenging, and there are some surprises as well. Those “aha” moments are what I love to give the hunters, and I’m a big fan of confirmers.
