Six Questions with Seven Paces:

  • 1Q) Wow! A treasure valued at $20,000! Please share how searchers can get involved! Is this your largest hunt to date?

Yeah! $20,000!!! It’s actually $15,000 cash and a $5,000 diamond from our favorite jeweler, River City Jewelers. To join, go to SevenPaces/GrandForks or if you live nearby, you can pick up a copy at our shops, The Urban Stampede and Rhombus Guys Pizza.

This is actually our second attempt at a hunt this size. The first attempt was a few years back. We tried to bootstrap a hunt that we modeled after Candyman David Klein’s Gold Ticket hunts. We assumed it would be such an instant success that we’d have no problem covering the prize with registration fees. We were very wrong about that, and ended up having to cancel and refund everyone. After that, we pretty much shuttered the business.

Fast forward a few years, and I received the book There’s Treasure Inside as a Christmas present. Our obsession with that prompted us to look at Seven Paces again in a different light. Taking what we learned from the first go, we decided to raise the prize money through local sponsorships (Visit Grand Forks, Ideal Aerosmith, River City Jewelers, Altru Health Systems, Alerus Financial, Bremer Bank, and The Grand Forks Downtown Association). Now here we are in the middle of an active treasure hunt that has the whole town abuzz… it’s awesome!

  • 2Q) The Legend of Grigg’s Gold is centered around Grand Forks. Does it help to have ‘boots on the ground’ in the area to solve some of the clues or can all clues be solved just as easily by someone out of state? Are searchers not familiar with the area at a disadvantage?

Ultimately, you will need to come to GF and get acquainted with the city. That said, you can theoretically solve a good portion of the hunt from your armchair.

  • 3Q) In our previous Six Questions (for A Fortune Lies in Vermont) you mention its clues to the hidden treasure will get you within about a 50 ft radius. How close will the clues in this hunt get you to the treasure?  Is it buried?

It is not buried, not in water, not up high… etc. The clues will lead very close to the treasure. I’d say within 10 feet of it.

  • 4Q) Have you been surprised by any early solutions, interpretations, or questions from hunters -on this new hunt or on ‘A Fortune Lies in Vermont’?  When are you expecting either hunt to be solved?

I have been surprised by how much mileage people have been able to put on in a small city like GF. People are really getting after it, and I love it when I hear that! I run into families on the hunt all the time. In fact, I was standing in a creek fly fishing just the other day when a family wandered by and recognized me. It’s been a blast so far!

  • 5Q) How would you describe the location of the hidden treasure?  Is it easily accessible 24 / 7/ free?  Do you have favorite or standout clues that you’d consider especially clever or satisfying for a searcher (without revealing the solution)?

All I can say about the actual location is that it is easily accessible. I’ll also add that this one is much different from any of the hunts we’ve done before.

  • 6Q) Do you have anything to add? What advice on solving the hunt do you have to leave with searchers?

My best advice is to stop often and take time to think about what’s in the book and what you’ve seen. Don’t push yourselves to exhaustion, because that limits your ability to perceive your surroundings and reason things out. Take it slow, and have fun!
