Six Questions with Rolltide

  • 1) When did you first hear and learn about the Treasure Hunt?

January 27,2016. Josh Gates was talking about it on Expedition Unknown as I was reading a book about Egypt… Secret Chamber Revisited.

  • 2) What inspired you to become involved and begin searching?

Josh mentioned that the treasure might not be buried but simply hidden and that the fellow who hid it had written a poem with clues that would help find it. I thought “Really? This should be a piece of cake ! ” (Boy, was I ever wrong.)

  • 3) What is your most favorite part about the Treasure Hunt so far?

I wound up finding a quiet spot in the Rocky Mountains where I search, where I like to just sit down and “be”. Nothing more, nothing less, just “be”. It is a spot where I can see for miles while at the same time, being a spot where I can see for hundreds of thousands of years into the past. I don’t have a care in the world while there, I could sit there for eternity.

  • 4) What is your least favorite part about the Treasure Hunt so far?

Those who have lost or out-grown what it takes to still believe in magic, unicorns, and Santa Claus.

  • 5) What is the best or most unique thing you found while searching for Forrest Fenn’s treasure chest?

Well, my spot mentioned above in #3 would be the best thing. Runners-up would be an old heel to a boot that I found in the woods, it causes me to wonder about the fellow who lost it…who he was, what was life like for him…

An old whiskey bottle with a rusted cap, a hole in the side where it had been tossed aside and left to be forgotten, forever meaningless to history and future generations…

A small china teapot that looks to have been from some little girl’s tea set, lost in time, never to be appreciated again…

Needless to say, these items held a special attraction for a man who lives and breathes history so, they now occupy a place of honor on a top shelf in my shop.

Once I am gone they will most likely return to being forgotten and meaningless again. And that causes me a certain sadness.

  • 6) What more would you like to say?

I feel privileged and honored to have been a part of the magic that Forrest has created.
I may never find the box of pretties but, a part of me was given the chance to live and dream again.
And for that, I am grateful and humbled.
Thank you Forrest.

Thanks Rolltide for you answers. Wonderful.  What beautiful treasures it seems you have found already!

Best of luck with all that you seek!  And Always Treasure the Adventure!

  1. There’s mixed reviews from the searcher community on that episode of Expedition Unknown, but I loved it. If nothing else, the landscapes were beautiful. The Wright family stole the show, and I think three generations of searchers out looking together is great.

Where’s the name “Rolltide” come from?
