ringing rocksNo matter where you live, there are always interesting places to visit nearby. Taking time to explore these different locations in your area can be a lot of fun and offer worthwhile experiences.  The sites may be important to history, have a mystery attached to them, or are merely beautiful landscapes to appreciate.  There are many reasons to get out and discover.

One of the curious places I (with my husband and two of our children) recently visited was Ringing Rocks Park in Upper Black Eddy, Pennsylvania. This 128 acre park features a 7 acre boulder field that gives the ability to play music.  The remarkable rocks scattered in this section of land resonate like bells when struck with a hard object.  Different rocks ring at different tones and frequencies.

ringing rocks parkArmed with hammers, we walked down a short wooded path from the parking and picnic area to this open patch of mystery.  Our plan was to make some Kile music.  The vast amounts of boulders are made up of various sizes and just rest on top of this hill in Bucks County.  As shown (right), the area is surrounded by forest and looks like a dry river bed (but isn’t).  There are no signs present for where the stones may have come from.  This, along with the fact the boulders have the rare characteristic to act like bells, leads to many imaginative ideas.  Could Giants or Aliens have cast them here to enjoy a rock concert (literally)?

I thought Giants.  My husband thinks Aliens.  Our kids think the most probable explanation is the boulder field was formed by an outcropping of an olivine diabase unit.  Under periglacial conditions the unit broke up into its current state by what is called frost wedging.  These fields are known as felsenmeer (German for ‘sea of rock’).

Okay, they might be right, but that doesn’t explain the ringing property of the stones.  I suggest magic.  My husband thinks radioactive.  Our kids think the ringing tones of the rocks may be caused by the density, material (high iron content), and internal stresses of the boulders.

Yet again, they may be right there too.  However, no one knows for absolute certainty, and this is a real mystery. Since all the rocks of the field are composed of the same content, and only about one third of the rocks in the field ‘ring’, it can’t be solely because of their content.  Plus, although uncommon, there are other ‘ringing fields’ throughout the world, and these have differences between the compositions and placements of the rocks.   More studies need to be made on the stones to confirm what exactly gives the boulder fields the ability to produce the metallic ringing sounds.  It seems to be a fine combination of elements, and one which continues to be researched.

We never mind a mystery, and so our most important question of this adventure was what song to play and sing.  This we all agreed on.  It was to be Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. It was the only song we all knew we could play.  We found the rocks that would ring the different notes and as my husband sang the song, my kids and I played our talented tune.  I loved it.  My husband liked it.  Our kids thought…..well, I won’t say.  They went off and jumped from rock to rock to do a bit more pounding on their own.  They wanted to find the rock with what they felt had the most spectacular tone.

If you live in the area, or will be visiting, it is a unique adventure.  And as a wonderful bonus, further on down the trail of this park is the largest waterfall in the county.  This was a charming and picturesque treat.  Beauty, mystery, and music all found in the same park?  This park does Rock!

  1. All is vibration, I heard someone say. Rocks, all material, all matter have high and low vibrational frequencies. Science, more and more are discovering these truths, Jesus, said, if the people won’t worship me, the rocks will “worship me”…. Luke 19–37, When He was come nigh, even now at the decent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitudes began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen. Saying blessed the king that come in thy name of the Lord; peace in heaven and glory in the highest And some of Pharisees (synagogue of satan), from among the multitudes said unto him, Master rebuke thy disciples, AND HE ANSWERED THEM AND SAID UNTO THEM, ….I TELL U THAT, IF THESE SHOULD HOLD THEIR PEACE, “”THE STONES WOULD CRY OUT””… NATURE IS crying out for the creator of life, the stone, the flower, the grass, the mountain top, “”nature bows down and cries out for the creator””, but thy PEOPLE listen NOUGHT, and “”reverence”” of our creator is void in thy human heart. It is written, the last days, their will be a ::circumcision of the heart:: the heart of man has waxed cold. ALL IS VIBRATION, CHRISTIANITY IS NOT A RELIGION, BUT A REALITY!!!! The vibration, (certain frequencies) created they beauty, thy handy works. IN THE BEGINING, WAS THEY WORD, AND HE SPOKE, (VIBRATION), and all things came to be!!!! Pennsylvania, the ”home”, of the ”liberty bell”. God speaks on multiple levels, BUT, DO WE LISTEN, is the question???
