1)The Lion Emerald

On October 2nd, 2018, a 5,655 carat emerald was found at Kagem, the world’s largest emerald mine in Zambia, Africa. The emerald was named, Inkalamu, meaning Lion.  Only the most remarkable found gems have the honor of receiving a name.  This treasured stone was presented with a name, because of not only its size, but also for the color and clarity the emerald displays.  It’s incredible.

The gemstone will be auctioned off in November, and may be cut into smaller gems offering many exceptional pieces.  These pieces will be considered the ‘pride of Inkalamu’, so to speak.  It’s amazing what treasures the earth still hides!

2)2,500 Year Old Chariot Found

In mid-October, it was announced by director of Persimmon Homes in Yorkshire England that an amazing discovery was made on a construction site where new homes were being built.  Work halted to allow a full excavation to be performed. The treasure found was a buried horse drawn chariot, with skeletons of horses and remains of a driver.  The archaeological discovery dates back to around 500 BC. Over the years, it is said 26 chariots have been excavated in the UK.  Might there be others yet to find?

3)The Ruby Slippers

Back in September (2018) news the famed Ruby Slippers, worn by Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz, and which were stolen form a Minnesota museum in 2005, were FOUND!  This pair is only 1 of 4 known pairs in existence. So tap your heels three times, they are now safely home!  Investigation into the theft 13 years ago and on all those responsible, is ongoing.  For now to have these shoes back is a treasure.  They are insured for 1 million dollars, however, it is believed if they were auctioned off, the price tag would be much higher.  They are one of the most well known movie props of all time, and are considered the Holy Grail to collectors.

4)Hurricane Michael Unearths Treasure

The devastating hurricane Michael, which hit the Florida Panhandle in October (2018) unearthed ship wreckage for all to see.  The wreckage was uncovered on Dog Island by the storm, and was the result of an earlier hurricane in 1899.  A total of 15 ships were destroyed during the Carrabelle Hurricane, and it is some of this wreckage that Michael revealed.

Often times after Hurricanes, and the waters churned or sands shifted, treasures are revealed.  It is a great time to go metal detecting along the beaches affected by the storms.  You never know what kind of treasure might be discovered!
