Often times people unknowingly pass by treasures.  This MW Series helps you become aware of Treasures that are out there waiting to be realized.  One of which is A Study in Scarlet. A copy of this rare story could cross your path somewhere, and it could be worth over 100,000!  Let’s explore!

A Study in Scarlet was written by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887. It was his first detective novel that was published in Beeton’s Christmas Annual, and if you haven’t guessed, it is the story where Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson make their first debut!

But as often first appearances are, it is not known how popular the characters of stories will become, and so numerous issues were not published, or then saved, at the time.  It’s not until later, that Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson became the famous duo, and their debut wanted by collectors.

Because of this demand, the Beeton’s Christmas Annual of 1887 is considered the most expensive magazine in the world.  Many collectors of Sherlock Holmes memorabilia want this first issue, and will pay for it.

According to a website dedicated to documenting this issue of Beeton’s Christmas Annual, 34 copies are known to exist. Only 11 of these are complete, and two copies are signed by Arthur Conan Doyle. Another copy had a page stolen which help an inscription by him.

It is possible, somewhere in an old stack of magazines, books, or papers, another rare copy of the 1887 Beeton’s Christmas Annual might be found. As recent as 2018, the 34was added to the list of known copies. Might you add the next one?

Unless a person knows to look for it, it’s possible the magazine might just get tossed, especially if in bad condition.  And while a copy in rough condition wouldn’t be worth as much as a nice copy, like the one which sold for 156,000 in 2007, it would still be worth keeping.

As with most collectible items condition does matter, and special details, like being signed, will increase the value, so prices of the magazine do vary.

Over the years, this edition of magazine (of various status) have sold from between $14,000 to $156,000.

An interesting fact on A Study of Scarlet is it was the first detective novel to use the investigative tool of a Magnifying Glass.  Making it all the more special!

So when you see a Beeton’s Christmas Annual- check the year! And if 1887, know you’ve found a treasure!

They are out there to find!

Best of luck with all that you seek!  Always Treasure The Adventure!
