notepadHi all. I wanted to take time to share a brief note.

Forrest has been told to back away from his computer for medical reasons. That means he will not be responding to very many emails in the future.

As many of you know, I received a list of ‘Weekly Words’ from Forrest a few months ago. I have many more to share and will continue to do this on every Friday.

Forrest has said he will continue to answer Questions or offer Words to me when he can, but not as regularly. (AND I should add, if I post Words NOT from the original list, I’ll state that within the post)

As of now though, and now that Forrest is 86, I think we should give him some space. He has earned it.

Best of luck with The Thrill of the Chase  and all that you seek.  And ALWAYS Treasure the Adventure! ~jenny

  1. Please don’t count me out yet. I’m just easing back a bit and walking much more than sitting. It was a needed change and the effects are already being felt. Tesuque dug a mushroom and ate it without knowing the rules. The resulting seizure lasted a few hours, but now she’s back to chasing chipmunks again. Hopefully she learned from the experience. f

    1. Glad to hear from you sir! Walking and enjoying clean air are good medicine.

Mushrooms have been bad here in Indiana. For those that don’t know, don’t run over them with your mower. It scatters them and if you have pets can or small children that play in the yard it can increase the risks. Best to pick them wearing latex gloves or using a plastic bag and dispose of them and wash afterwards.

    2. Anyone counting Forrest Fenn out clearly doesn’t know how to count. Taking a break when needed is the sign of maturity, not age, even for a 13 year old young man inhabiting an 86 year old body. Glad to hear that your pup is doing well after her fungus encounter. Thanks for your update.

    3. I never counted you out Forrest glad you are moving around take some leisurely walks and enjoy the sunrise and sunset. Now Tesuque could not possibly know the rules of high society or maybe she didn’t eat a mushroom and it was just the digging that cauxed the seizure. I am sure the chipmunks enjoyed their few hours of play time at Tesuque’s expense.

    4. The poem has been solved!!! My spot was wrong, I was 110% sure too but was 110% wrong. The question is, did I come out of their with something to treasure? Yes, yes I did, my memory of that crazy adventure with two friends from Missouri to New Mexico. THE REAL SOLVE; ” As I have gone alone in there and with my treasure’s bold, I can keep my secret where, and hint of riches new and old”. ( The first four sentences mean, THOUGHT’S and DREAMS.) “Begin it where warm waters halt and take it in the canyon down, not far, but too far to walk, put in below the home of Brown”. ( The next four sentences mean, HEART and SOUL.) ” From there it’s no place for the meek, the end is ever drawing nigh; there’ll be no paddle up your creek, just heavy loads and water high. (The meaning for this, one word DEATH.) “If you’ve been wise and found the blaze, look quickly down your quest to cease, but tarry scent and marvel gase, just take the chest and go in peace”. ( meaning, This part means to look at YOURSELF and EXCEPT WHO YOU ARE.) ” So why is it I must go and leave my trove for all to seek? The answer I already know, I’ve done it tired, and now I’m weak”. ( This part Forest tells you why he had to lie to you about a treasure chest, it’s because he could tell you till he’s blue in the face to go out and enjoy LIFE and LIVE LIFE, but would you of, if he didn’t sweeten the pot? ) “So hear me all and listen good, your effect will be worth the cold, if you are brave and in the wood, I give you title to the gold”. ( This means, just hear him out before you judge him, listen, you and your family getting out and enjoying life and living it, is worth the cold hearted lie he has told us. I call it a lie because Forest does to! If you have seen Pinocchio fary god mother said; BE BRAVE MY LITTLE PINOCCHIO BE BRAVE.) Yes, their iis a treasure out their for all of us, go out LIVE LIFE, it’s to short, Fenn is still alright in my book!!! Thanks ( please Forrest Fenn reply to this.

        1. Yes just a dumb country boy here! Thanks for pointing that out. Am not on here everyday like people like you, think about yourself just waiting for Fenn to tell you where he hid his treasure, is that why your here? Hope you get some laughs with your comment it was a good one.😂 I’m out everyday with my family living life, I have five boys and one little girl, and treasure every minute. ( Don’t drink or get high)

    5. Mr. Fenn,
I think Tesuque is more like you than you think. She probably only needed a little positive engagement. Now if Tesuque is anything like my dog Lucky, that chipmunk chasing is only a good will gesture. Dogs like my Lucky takes things to heart and he makes his own rules when his master doesn’t take him for walks.

I remember when I failed to see the warning signs and I took Lucky for granted, the next mushroom he ate was so large, the remnants were covered by a mushroom cloud. Those darn principle based dogs can really kick an owner in the butt. Hopefully you and Tesque will see eye to eye.

      1. PS. Forgot to mention I’m so happy to hear Tesuque made it after her mushroom encounter. Dang dogs…they like to eat the nasty stuff whether it’s good for them or not! Molly finds various animal scat a delicacy…go figure.

I knew we could count on you to recover quickly. Take a walk, take a nap, catch some Z’s. A good
nap never hurt anyone. 🙂 The image of your pup eating that mushroom makes me shiver–glad to
here the pup’s OK. I hope you’ll be able to continue with the question/answer with Jenny on Fridays—
but your health definitely comes first. Great to see you post on the blog!

  3. Dear Forrest
I’m happy to hear that you are out and about.
More time outside, with your dog, will keep your spirits high.
You keep looking up, and I will keep looking down.
On my next trip I will hit a home run, and knock this ball clear out of town.
Yes, I know it is time to quit monkeying around.
My prayers and sincer thank you’s are sent to you, and your loved ones.
    Forever friends, HAS

  4. Forrest,

Take it easy my friend. No one is counting you out, but you need to start getting out more… and away from you texting machine. A famous person once said something similar to that if I remember correctly.

    1. Thomas,

I politely ask that you not state, represent or insuate in any way that the treasure chest is not real or hidden in the mountains north of Sante Fe. Most of us on this website are mature, grown adults (myself 46). Please focus on finding the treasure and enjoying the Chase. It is REAL MY FRIEND!! And it’s still out there for the taking!!! Embrace the Chase and keep your eye on ball.

At the end of Forrest Fenn’s rainbow is a beautiful, meaningful lesson. The treasure chest Is the exclamation mark to the Poem and Fenn’s imaginative Art. I don’t think, believe, wish or hope the treasure chest is real. I “KNOW” THE TREASURE CHEST iS REAL! Happy Hunting my friend. 🙂

          I am going to bed.

  6. Dearest Forrest;
My heart lightened a thousand pounds when I read your post above. I am SOOOOO glad that you and Tesuque are getting out in the sunshine, and that you are already feeling the benefits of getting away from the computer.
HAPPY hunting to Tesuque – chase those chipmunks girl!!!
Forrest, if eating a “room” or two will brighten your day – give it a try – JUST JOKING!!!
Let the thousands of prayers and well-wishes from us “Searchers” seep into your soul and rejuvenate you back into the 13 year old that you are at heart.

  8. Dear Forest
Glad your getting some much needed R and R, and glad Tesque survived the afwul mushroom ordeal.
We have had record breaking rainfall this month here in Arkansas. My two small Beagle dogs Sally and Lucy have been with their noses to ground under the fresh cut grass eating some kind of worms, the worms have a hard shelled head as i can hear the crunch when the dogs chew one, I got one out of Lucys mouth before she could swallow the whole thing, crunch head was gone but little worm body was small short and black and white stripe
looking. The dogs are enjoying the delicasee so much they both have red irritated spots under their noses from scavenging for the little critters.
I bet they would make good fish bait.

Experiencing Seventeen Dollars a Square Inch by Forrest Fenn

seventeen dollars a square inch by forrest fennOn the inside dust jacket of Seventeen Dollars a Square Inch by Forrest Fenn reads, “This book is not a biography of Eric Sloane; rather, it is almost a recorded conversation between two friends who shared a common interest and the love of simple things and simpler times.”

And as the book is not so much a biography, this article is not so much a review; rather it is an account of what I sensed by relishing each page. There is a subtle, but powerful undercurrent to read more than the mere ink sprawled across the pages. I also realized it was this depth that I had been experiencing in many of Forrest’s writings. And still do.

Throughout the book, Forrest warmly writes about his special friendship with Eric Sloane. The numerous and exceptional works by Sloane that illustrate the pages makes a reader feel he is perusing a museum filled with priceless art. This is a delightful visual stroll as each image lures the viewer into a timeless world of its own.

But if enticement by this ramble isn’t enough to impart an appreciation, the thoughts expressed between these two friends surely are. I think they bring life into a special focus; one that presents another piece of priceless art. Painted from words of the book, an immense picture of the quest for awareness is seen.

This quest for awareness, and the contentment it brings, is what I realized I had been noticing when reading other stories written by Forrest. I struggled with understanding why reading, say for example, Too Far to Walk, I had such the strong impulse of ‘stop wasting time and live life’ sentiment. The reason became obvious to me after reading the following words found in Seventeen Dollars a Square Inch. The words of:

‘How many stories and dreams are in there that we will never know about?’

The above question was asked while Forrest and Eric were chatting about the wonders of life and questioning what hidden, forgotten, but still worthy items were secretly resting inside an old barn Eric had painted. I thought, ‘YES! I want to know that too!’ And I recognized the insides of this old barn were also being related to the heart and minds inside each of us.

‘How many stories and dreams are in you that you or others don’t even know about?’

By listening in on this precious conversation, the desire to explore was being awakened within me yet more. Even if I heard only the surface of what was being spoken between these two wise hearts of Forrest and Eric (and I’m not so bold to say I know all that was being expressed), the curious nature of me was stirred. It’s the same feeling I receive reading The Thrill of the Chase, and I believe one of the true purposes for Forrest creating the poem and hunt for the treasure chest.

640px-The_Moment_Carter_Opens_the_TombI imagine it something similar to the story of discovering King Tut’s Tomb. For years Carnarvon and Carter searched for lost tombs and treasures of Kings. Finally, right before giving up dreams of a find, excavations revealed steps to what was hoped to be the historical tomb.

A small hole chiseled out of the top left corner of the doorway allowed a glimpse into what time had left waiting to be remembered. The moment of discovery is now famous:

“Can you see anything?” Carnarvon asked

    “Yes, Wonderful things!” Carter replied.

Through the breach Carter saw golden relics and a sealed doorway for the unearthing of many more amazing treasures. I can only imagine the excitement. But I can also connect this to the awareness that is being stirred in the hearts and minds of all those who have taken a glimpse through their doors by reading The Thrill of the Chase.

How wonderful it is to be able to browse comments here or on Dal’s blog, and read about others who are discussing the hunt, and see that dreams and adventures are being lived and enjoyed. Sure there are the ups and downs, mistakes being made, but one can witness an awareness of life being sought for. The treasure awaits and beckons us all on.

Worth mentioning here are the following words of Sloane written within the book of topic:

“Present day life presents a poverty of awareness for so much is done for us by science and machinery that we are ceasing to enjoy the awareness of living. In the city we flip a switch and light arrives without the knowledge of its origin; we turn a faucet and water flows without our knowing from whence it came. We wear clothing without knowing where the material came from………..The joy and satisfaction of doing things for ourselves is almost a lost art. It has been my life’s work to bring back awareness for those who have taken life for granted, looking at the sky without seeing it, looking at the land without feeling its mood and enjoying its heritage.” (Sloane also shares some of this belief in his book, ‘Once Upon a Time’).

I believe regaining this lost awareness is definitely part of The Thrill of the Chase as well. It is one of the treasures which can be found by everyone, and I feel the hunt is one of the ways Forrest chose to bring back awareness, like his friend Sloane did through his works.

I actually believe it is part of many treasure hunts. The Maranatha Puzzle author used a similar example to explain the questioning from searchers of; ‘Why do I have search for the ‘Key’? You found it and know it, can’t you just tell me what it is?’ Duncan Burden answered this by relating a story of planting, nurturing, and growing potato plants, to then be able to pick, clean, cut, and cook delicious french fries. It was then asked who savored the french fry more? The person who was merely given one? or the person who actually took an active role in creating it?

It’s obvious discovery for and of one self is a journey worth traveling, encouraged, and of immense value. I’ll keep widening the door to see and become more aware of the world and all treasures around me. I know many will continue to do the same.

I feel the books written by Forrest (and other treasure creators), offer the awakening and the glimpse into what time has left for us to discover and remember.

The authors are there to give the chisel and ask,

    ‘Can you see anything?’

And it is our decision, and only ours, to choose to look and say, ‘Yes, wonderful things!’

Thanks to all those who stir the hearts and minds inside these old barns of ours. Wonderful things are being seen.

And for those of you who aren’t so interested in the above and only want to know if there were any possible clues to the treasure chest in the book Seventeen Dollars a Square Inch, Forrest does mention that the color Brown is a neglected and forgotten color. Perhaps the Home of Brown is some old and forgotten barn or cabin. And if it is, be sure to pause, and wonder about ‘what stories and dreams are lost in there’. 🙂This is what I’m taking abut
