treasure hunt bookDear Forrest,

Can you tell us more about the Illustration on page 43 in ttotc, of the Gypsies, that is going for auction to help Jdiggins?

Thanks ~ Matt

Sure Matt, and thanks for the question.

I have fond memories of watching the Gypsies dance. It was always late at night, and the beat of the music really captivated me. I remember running so fast through the cemetery and across the fields to get to where they were, and being out of breath when I crawled under the wagon. I was afraid someone would hear me panting.

There was this one old guy with a long beard who played the violin. When he started, the other gypsies, out of respect, would huddle close to the fire and just watch and listen. It was slow and haunting. I used to think I would like to be a gypsy and travel with them. f

Forrest has donated the following original image from The Thrill of the Chase (page 43) to be auctioned off.  All proceeds of this auction will go to Jdiggins who recently lost her home and business in the Mendocino Fires.

  1. I often wonder about gypsy blood and who has it and who doesn’t. It seems when I look into the eyes of some folks, I see a lil something familiar there.
Not all who wander are lost. Nor those who wonder either.
Wonder if our illustrious and illustrative host ever stole a kiss from a gypsy?
    Or wanted to?
    I just wonder …

        1. Yes, the counts are in play, in one manner or another. But this one leaves me wondering what I’m missing. Also, just to help a little the tilde in mathematics means “about”. And here we are counting. To make “Matt” change to an “about” number, you can change it to an “about” word… “MAP”. And then a word count emerges. And it’s relevant. On a side note, Jenny had recently done one of her code articles on this code.

  2. Gypsies seem to be born with a sense of wanderlust…always moving on.

What a wonderful cultural experience that must have been…as a young man…to watch the gypsies dance…and listen to the music…

It’s heartwarming to see friends rallying to the cause of friend.

    Like Gypsies…I reckon.

Thank you, Jenny and Matt…and very generous of you, Forrest…again.

  3. That sounds like a great memory and something to cherish.

It is special that Forrest would do this for JDiggins. My heart goes out to her and others whose lives have been affected by this fire and other tragedies.

I fancy this picture from the book. It speaks to me of places I feel I’ve been or have wanted to experience and it tugs at my heart to go back.

Sometimes life gets in the way of our adventures. But I hope all are able to pick themselves get back out there.

Maybe the “The Chase” survives the end of summer. It might even go into next year for all we know.

  4. I saw a string of Gypsy Wagons once in West Germany. It looked like a great train of colors slowly moving through the green country side. It was beautiful.

Thanks Mr. Fenn for donating to help JDiggins and her family out.

  5. I think it was an awesome gift of Mr Fenn. He let page 43 free from it’s normal restraint for the public. Now that is some true latitude!

    OH!
  6. Some years ago there was a bad car crash in Texas. That’s when I found out that a lot of the “Gypsy” troupes in the US are not Roma at all but Irish Travelers- tinkers.

I think I’ll leave, and go with him
Now that the summer is coming in
Follow the road with a tinker band
And a barelegged boy to lead me-

    1. The BLAZE would bring a handsome…some, if Forrest decides to spill the kettle of beans. But here I’ll give you the Blaze for free. LAZY B. It’s a brand. B on it’s side, like a butt which is now a bust. Good luck everyone. I’ve been saying the poem is self evident for 4 years, but hey what do I know?

  7. Thank You Mr. Fenn, Ms. Kile, and Matt! I Love it when the wind comes from the East. My spot is taking on a lot of rain, I may seemas a “gypsy” after so mmuch time spent here. I could use a “reverse rain dance”, if there were such thing. Mr. Fenn, I hope someone can find your chest for your birthday tomorrow! Happy Birthday a little early! I Love what you made, and wish you and your family many more great years, health, and best wishes! 😀

  8. The story is a reference about Wise and the Blaze.

Wise , look up the word. Wise means to Know. Silent knowledge, Tacit knowledge, to see. Just like the old bearded man(sageagious) and the east winds. The east winds are the silent winds.

Blaze, to GLOW. Look up definition and etymology of Glow! Glow is what a fire does at night. Flickers like a star or moon at night. Forrest is concealed and covered under the wagon- glow is covered and concealed such as the Warm glow. Warm is a reference to comfortable, covered up, tucked in.

Now where this is I don’t know but hope this helps other searchers. This place is a mystery until someone finds the chest. Like Forrest says in the story above the place is where they were. And he ran to get there.(chase).

Now this next paragraph is a guess but he ran thru a cemetery, maybe the home of brown. And across fields to a gathering place of travelers. Not sure but just a theory. Another help for searchers may be gutter. Gutter is the gut. It is also a type of low flickering glow. Gutter is also a poor postion such as in the gutter like a bum or vagabond- the traveler Forrest wanted to be???

    1. I just remembered what Forrest said once as I was putting this all together to try and figure out where this might be. He said in the “silent mountains”. So Wise could be a reference to which mountains or mountain range. Just a guess??

      1. Quiet Mountain. The stones are heads but once you get past this do a belly flop right into home plate and there is the i drawn from the heart to the toe jam hallway. Only if I run I may not make it. Wisdom comes and where it goes, nobody knows until the winning run. Batter the ante up. Cast a line and swing!!! Catching out never looked so fine. ChooChoo… Very interesting observation dpt

  9. I love the gypsy wagon art. Someone is going to be very excited to receive it and know they helped a nice family. I also feel lucky….I have someone to go with me on the chase. Not sure when, but it’s going to a great adventure with my step dad. This will be our amazing race adventure.

  10. Well I haven’t posted a lot in the last month, but that’s ok. All I can say that is this Chase can bring the the worst of you out. Forgetting what is important in life. I have given up on searching for the Gold, and now have decided that I can help others find the treasure. I like to think that Forrest has his 1000’s of treasures to find. That way we all have a chance. But who knows, there is something for everyone to find out there, I feel it. Maybe just the experience and the self realization of it all? Thank you Forrest, you are an inspiration to me.
