Death_Valley_Zabriskie_PointHello Mr. Fenn,

You have been very clear as to not revealing whether the chest is buried or not. However, since you have told us it is above 5000 feet, in a funny way you have put a limit on if it was buried, how deep it would be. For example, if we were at 5002 feet altitude, it could be no more that 2 feet down. However, it we were at 8002 feet, it could be as deep at 3002 feet! That would be tough to do in one afternoon!

So my question is without making any comment as to whether it is buried or not, can you refine the limit? For example, would it be less than 1 foot? It would seem to help if searchers who believed it was buried didn’t unnecessarily dig deep holes. ~ Thanks Mark

To follow your line of reasoning Mark, if the treasure was in Death Valley, CA, which is 282 feet below sea level, the chest would have to be floating in the air at least 5,282 feet above the ground. I don’t have the slightest idea what I’m talking about so I’m going to make myself a chocolate milk and go to bed.f

  1. This Question and Answer just makes me laugh……the fun in the Chase! Thanks Mark and Forrest for the smiles…..

It is interesting, though….is Forrest saying, while having fun, that is just level with the ground…and not buried? lol……who knows!! What do you all think?

    1. Hi Grimm,

I’m not seeing much in this one. Were you referring to the Death Valley? (DV is latin abbrev. for “God Willing”). That he knows, or found, the elevation of Death Valley shows the kind of information he pays attention to, though. The “floating in the air” comment reminded me of the floating, blown-out hat (Mildew) in one of the Scrapbook posts. The 282 is interesting.

I’m not so sure that his comments about walking into the desert to die, or flinging himself onto the chest, are to be taken seriously, either. That’s probably not to important for the purposes of the solving the puzzle, though, in my opinion.

  2. Hey forest hope all is well and someone does find this before your time comes my question for you if you read this is weather it’s in the first , second or third. Of course I do not expect you to give me this answer but I think you know what I’m referring to.

  3. Well, in my opinion I think it’s too big of a clue to touch upon especially since I feel I have solved all the clues and leave in about a week to find out 🙂 However to talk about rather it has been buried or not is just going to give it away – sort of defeats the whole purpose of the challenge involved concerning the poem.

Another thing I would like to say is that IF I’m given title to the Gold and not in the obvious sense but rather the secret sense, I will keep it as Forrest has 😉

    Happy hunting all

  4. I no longer believe it is buried. Thought a lot about it and believe it is hidden or rather placed in. I thought about it as a “final” resting place and remembered my dearest Grandfather the fisherman. Grandfather is in his final resting place and he is not “buried.”

      1. So true. It is amazing how things can get “buried” around the house. Funny how it is always the item you seek that is “buried”. For now, it is a bronze box that is “buried” or hidden from view. Maybe I need to part the tall grass everyone talks about. A flashlight would help and of course, the item I always forget – my eyeglasses. Who knows how many treasures I missed because I do not see well and am irritated with glasses. I tried contacts and they did not give me the vision fields I need. Thanks Betty.
