Book Review:  The Curse of Oak Island by Randall Sullivan (December 2018) (Available on Amazon)

The Curse of Oak Island by Randall Sullivan is a must read for anyone interested in the legendary treasure hunt of Oak Island. Sullivan thoroughly researches, investigates, and lays out the past attempts, written accounts, supposed theories, ongoing speculations, and enduring efforts to discover what sits at the bottom of the so called Money Pit.  If anything.

He covers the history of how it all started, and the stories which transpired after a depression in the earth noticed in 1795 prompted 3 kids to dig for a believed treasure.  He carefully details the discoveries made, and challenges at hand to learn what might be hidden deep below the earth.  Is it just an ordinary treasure of gold, or something which its discovery would change our perception of the world?  No one knows.

He introduces the book by including the same question he asked readers in a previous article he had written on Oak Island for the Rolling Stone Magazine:

Can what’s buried beneath the ground on Oak Island possibly be worth what the search for it has already cost?  Six lives, scores of personal fortunes, piles of wrecked equipment, and tens of thousands of man-hours have been spent so far, and that’s not to mention the blown minds and broken spirits that lie in the wake of what is at once the world’s most famous and frustrating treasure hunt.”

The book dives deep into the immense hole of uncertainties and tries to answer the question. When finished reading, it will be for each of us to decide our own answer to that question.

What I think we could all agree on after reading the book, though, is there is something truly mindboggling, mystifying, and incredible about Oak Island.  It draws us in to wonder.  The wonder could be for what is hidden there? Or the wonder could be for why people are so determined to chase after this believed treasure?  It depends on perspectives.  What do you believe?  Is there some astonishing waiting to be unearthed or was it all a story from the beginning, and it continues on?

Will either ever be fully known?

Reading the book might help answer those questions.

I believe there is something there to discover.

  1. As a teenager in the 60’s when this mysterious treasure of Oak Island first appeared in the Reader;s Digest I was intrigued as to what was buried there. When this TV series came on the air here in Indiana, at age73 I am still interested as to what they will find. I believe that what treasures are unearthed that belongs to the Holy Land should be returned to them. It is still fun to watch weekly I enjoy reading and wondering as to when someone will find Fenn’s treasure as well.
