The Covered Bridge
The Covered Bridge

Since Halloween is near, I thought I would post a ‘haunted tale’ that I recently experienced.  It really had me a bit freaked…..for I wasn’t expecting anything to actually occur and had gone ‘ghost hunting’ for just the fun of it.  BUT something did happen…and we all got out of there fast.  I’m still debating whether it was ‘fun’ or not…lol.  I do think it was definitely adventurous, though.

For years my oldest son, Mahlon, and his friends have gone ghost hunting.  They visit various places which have ‘tales’ connected to them to see if they can capture on video, audio, or other tech gadgets any of the supposed ‘paranormal’ activity that is said to go on at these places.

The stories they come back with are always extremely intriguing, even though sometimes the events are quite frightening.  They are currently working on a ‘documentary’ about their adventures, and so I don’t want to give any of that away.  I will say they have some amazing clips of questionable activity and it will be thrilling to see it when finished!

I had told my son I wanted to go ‘ghost hunting’ with him some night.  So last month I got my chance.  Mahlon, his girlfriend, my one daughter, and I decided to go.  We left a little after ten at night to go visit a location where Mahlon and his team have had some great success in experiencing the unexplained.

The location is a local covered bridge.  Because of a horrible tragedy which is believed to have happened there in the 1800’s, the area is said to be ‘haunted’.  One of last times Mahlon and his friends were there, they had walked onto the bridge and tried to ‘respectfully provoke’ an ‘incident’ to record.  They got one.

While standing there, asking for whoever might be there to make themselves known, they immediately heard a huge thump which shook the bridge.  They also saw a black mass pass right by them and felt a rush of cool air.

Now, I’ll admit, that while I believe things happen, I remain cautious and try to come up with reasonable explanations for the things that occur to them (and there are lots of other stories).  And until it happens to you, you can somewhat dismiss them as ‘mere oddities of something normal’.  But when something happens to you….then you begin to wonder, and it isn’t so easy to dismiss things as ‘the wind’ or ‘whatever’ anymore!

When we went to the bridge, the night was warm, calm, and clear.  We parked nearby, got out of the car, and walked towards the bridge together. We didn’t have any lights (they had their phones and I had a camera). I took our pictures…lol…(It’s a basic camera)

Then I asked Mahlon, ‘Now what do you do?’

He said, ‘you just listen and let ‘them’ know we are here if ‘they’ want to make themselves known to us’.  Mahlon said a few things to announce ‘ourselves’, but nothing strange was noticed to occur.  And none of us were really scared.  This was Mahlon’s girlfriend’s first time going with him too and so we all were sort-of ‘unsuspecting’ and just standing nonchalantly around.

We stood at the one end of the bridge.  We didn’t go on it yet.  So I took out my camera, and chuckled, ‘I’m going to take a picture, so if you are here, let me see you in it’.  I took a picture of ‘into the bridge’….nothing. (Image shown above at the beginning of the post)

We were talking some and enjoying the night and time together.

Since nothing spooky was being felt, we decided to walk onto the bridge. But before we did, we stopped, stood quietly, and Mahlon asked:

Is there anyone here that wants to keep us off the bridge off tonight?

Right after he asked this question, we all heard this deep, low growl from the other side of the bridge.

Honestly, I couldn’t believe it.  Marissa asked, ‘did you guys hear that?’ and we all said ‘yes’….and I said, ‘let’s go’.  Lol….

Really, that was enough for me.  I didn’t need to experience more on this night.

But maybe on another……it’s not decided yet.

I’ll let you know if I do go again…….

We haven’t come up with a ‘reasonable explanation’.  We all share the same thought….it was a ‘growl/snarl’ and not of an animal.  And that did answer our question.  🙂

If you have a ‘ghost story’….go ahead and share it….It’s that time of year!  (but I love them all year too!)

    1. Hi Jenny. To answer your question…No. I have never gone out intentionally looking for ghosts. I always just figure they’ll find me and send me a message…or two…if they want to. LOL!

I reckon it’s too late to get Bill Cosby to host a show called “Ghosts Say the Darndest Things”.

The sad truth is…it’s some of the living we really need to be scared of.

I’d rather Rest in Peace than…

      …if you’re asking me.

      Happy Halloween!
