The Thrill of the Chase Treasure Hunt, launched in 2010 by Forrest Fenn, has reached Legendary status. Thousands upon thousands of searchers have embarked on a mission to discover the location of a treasure chest filled with extraordinary artifacts, gold, jewels, coins, and a few surprises, hidden somewhere in the Rocky Mountains. It’s been patiently waiting for a searcher who will correctly identify and follow the nine clues given in Forrest’s mystifying poem. Who will find his secreted cache?

This dare presented by Forrest has offered many searchers unforgettable adventures and the challenge of a lifetime. Numerous treasures, of a different type have been found, but not those inside his hidden bronze 10×10 chest. Those treasures continue to sit quietly, listening to the whispering mountains surrounding them, and anticipating a sign that someone is near.

Since the start of the hunt, MW has watched the Chase move from a hunt for a treasure to the now Legendary Quest for Forrest Fenn’s Treasure.   It is always a pleasure, and real honor, to be able to catch up with Forrest and ask him a few Questions on what he is thinking about the incredible journey he has inspired so many to begin.

Enjoy!

4 Questions for the 6:

  • 1Q)  A new era has begun and 2019 has come to an end.  Can you give us searchers an update on how you feel the Chase went this past year?  Has the Treasure Chest heard the clomp of searchers closer than 200 feet? Do you feel the Rockies are enjoying the flurry of activity caused by the Chase?

Many searchers are being unduly influenced by the blogs. When several people voice the opinion that the treasure is hidden in a certain state, there is a flurry of searchers that head for that state. New Mexico used to be the favorite search area, but in 2019 that popularity on the blogs switched to the northern states. Of course, the overwhelming majority of people who are looking for the Fenn treasure don’t read the blogs so my opinion is drawn from a very small percentage of searchers. I think the Rockies are happy to see so many first-time visitors.

  • 2Q) The little girl from India has fueled many a conversation and debate. You have mentioned that she cannot get closer than the first two clues, with having your poem and a map of the Rockies, and while speaking good English. What would help her get closer to identifying the next seven clues?

She should not let her thinking to get in a rut.

  • 3Q) I love the many rules you’ve shared making for yourself over the years. They truly offer valuable guidance. If you were a searcher of this incredible treasure chest hidden in the Rockies, what rules would you make for yourself? What are a few rules that you feel searchers should make in the Chase?

I can’t think of any rules that I’ve made unless you consider clues to be rules. If I were a new searcher, I would study the poem and not use the blogs as a rule book. Safety should always be the first consideration

  • 4Q) It’s been nearly 10 years since the chest was hidden, and you have launched the Chase. Since it’s 2020, it seems like an appropriate question to ask would be ‘what vision do you have for the next 10 years? 100 years? 1000 years? for the Chase?’

My vision tells me that it is only a matter of time until someone finds the treasure.

For those new to the hunt, Here is the Q/A referred to above on the Little Girl from India:

5Q) Your treasure hunt has inspired people worldwide to discover history, culture and nature, but many people, (even in the US) might be deterred because they don’t live near the Rockies or can’t afford to travel. Should they be deterred? Can a little girl in India, who speaks good English, but only has your poem and a map of the US Rocky Mountains, work out where the treasure is? And would she be confident as she solves each clue, or only confident when she has solved them all?

A)I wish I had another treasure to hide in the Appalachians. The little girl in India cannot get closer than the first two clues. There are many disabled people who are deeply into maps and geography, and they are having a lot of fun.

The Q/A involving the Little Girl from India inspired the Forrest Fenn Gold Medallion Treasure Hunts.

For those new to the hunts, the FF Gold Medallions were approved by Forrest Fenn and especially produced to offer as a special prize for these hunts.  The first series, which included 10 hunts, 2 each month released from January thru May, had searchers on chase to find a hidden coded stone in 2019. The coded stone was hidden somewhere in the ‘Appalachians’.  Which as mentioned was inspired by the MW’s Q/A, where Forrest said:

“I wish I had another treasure to hide in the Appalachians.” f

MW and HoD (MysteriousWritings and Home of Dal (Neitzel) made that a reality!  Our sites teamed up and hid treasure in the Appalachians for searchers of the Chase to find in the off season.  Here is a link including the FFGM puzzles and winners of that series.  Searchers had an awesome time and we loved hosting the hunts!

  1. At first blush, looking over these 4 answers, all of them seem to create a picture that searchers (as a whole) aren’t getting closer…
Q1) Forrest doesn’t say anything regarding the discovery of new clues by the search community, in general, but suggest that most aren’t solving clues but rather going with mass opinion. And instead of addressing the “clomp-of-feet” specifically, he seems to reinforce his previous point by mentioning the mass of new searchers swarming the Rocky Mountains, in general, but not precisely.
Q2) Although the Little Girl from India has got a lot of mileage, it appears this hypothetical case and our thoughts regarding this “hint” may not be on the right track or it just time to let this one go…
Q3) Here once again Forrest is reinforcing its all about figuring out the clues and not what most people think on the blogs.
Q4) Finally, Forrest uses the modifier “only” – when discussing how soon he thinks it will be until the Treasure is found. Since time is infinite; a small amount of infinity, is just as long, as a large amount of infinity… That being said, the masses may need all the time possible since it doesn’t seem like most people are even close to solving the clues correctly, BUT just perhaps, they may not have that much time…

    1. I think you’re missing an important part of his answer to the 4th question. “My vision tells me…” To me, that says he has read the correct solve, either sent to him via email or elsewhere on the internet, and that it’s literally only a matter of time until said solve can be pursued, since it’s too cold and snowy right now. That’s my interpretation, at least.

I’ll admit, though, I’ll be sad if that’s the case, because I’ve been having fun trying to solve the poem. I even managed to find a few locations that have an amazing view and are completely isolated from the rest of civilization, and would love to visit them at some point in my life.

    2. I’m in total agreement with Gregory, the correct solve has been presented to Forrest and he is letting the person know that he agrees it is right,
Winter “time” is off time to think and resolve problems with our solves,
when we can ponder on the poem and relish in the fact that we understand at least, some of it…
I hope to treasure hunt someday, in the Caribbean, where the pirates roamed so many years ago.
